If you aren't sure if it will work for you maybe I can help. Really there are two things you need to worry about:
    1) Can you get appropriate drivers for XP and yes you can. The page is confusing but look for the most recent versions of each type and you should be good to go. I would go ahead and d-load them all and back them up (as well as the rest of your files) to somewhere other than the drive that XP will go to like an external drive.
    2) Can your system handle XP. XP's requirements aren't nearly as much as Vista and it isn't much higher than 2000 but you still need to look at that. If you tell me your system specs I can tell you whether or not you should get acceptable performance with XP on your system. I will need to know what kind of processor you have and how fast it is, how much memory (RAM) that you have, how large your hard drive is, & what you do most on your computer.

It'll really help if you do and post the DAL Hardware scan of your system. I can understand your apprehension and your concerns. Stuff like this can really make some non-computer people nervous so it isn't something you have to do. There are some advantages to doing so. XP is still supported by MS where as 2000 isn't, today's software is more compliant to it, & I believe that it is much better than 2K.

As for closing the thread only the moderators and the administrator can do that.

Probably not. You can always buy a copy in stores. or from newegg They are still selling them. What about your system specs?

Just to add a few points. Win 2K disks are going for about $100 these days. Just a couple examples:

    Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (OEM)

Buy cheap discount Windows 2000 Pro OEM Full Version at Royal Discount

The minimum requirements for XP are not too different from 2K but the recommended requirements are somewhat higher.

System requirements for Windows XP operating systems

As to changing systems and keys:

Using a previously used key will most likely trigger a demand for a personal phone call to Microsoft.

You will explain to them what you are doing and they will remove the key from one computer and transfer it to another.

This probably only applies to retail versions. Microsoft has no control over Dell disks or keys.

Dell bought the keys from Microsoft and I doubt Dell is going to transfer for you.

Let us know if we can help further.

Your processor is decent for XP and should be fine for basic stuff like emailing, web browsing, word processing, and some older games. Newer more intensive games or heavy video editing will give you some problems. The first time I ran XP it was on a pentium 3 at 450 mhz which is less than half the speed of yours.

Your problem is the RAM. I know that the recommended amount is only 128 MB which is about what you have however my parent's last computer had only 256 MB and it drove them nuts. I wouldn't run XP on a machine with less than 384 MB of ram and preferably 512 MBs or more. If you could upgrade your RAM you should be able to put XP on it, provided you can get a legal serial, unfortunately I couldn't find system specs for your model so I can't tell you how much your model will hold. What about your hard drive?

    C610 drivers for XP here:

    Drivers & Downloads

Sorry if I've lost the main track of this thread as to echos but if you want to install XP you should have no problem providing you have a valid product key.

Microsoft will let you transfer a key but the previous system will no longer be valid.

Basically: one key = one computer.
