Western Digital Caviar 31600 on USB

Hello everybody i am new here and this is my second question about this on internet.
This is my problem, i have an beutiful 486 Packard Bell computer, it is a desktop computer. Recently i started the computer and Windows 3.11 wont boot so i decided to format, but i have very important data on that computer. Now i can use floppy disc and pull it out bu there is about 450 MB of data. Yes, i forgot DOS still works.
I tried to connect it to my new mchine via usb. I have an USB cas, nothing is written on case so i do not know name of the nunit. It works with newer IDE HDD i used it before. But when i connected my Caviar 31600 from 486 , and i put the disc to be slave, jumper setting, Windows XP Service Pack 2 installs it and reports an succesful installation but there is no additional drive in Windows Explorer. No drive letter, in computer managment there is no USB drive. I tried under Vista Ultimate same thing. I tried under Windows 98SE on my laptop, it frezes computer.
    Anybody had something like this?
    Thanks in advance.
Sorry for long story and bad english.

Try setting it as Master. It is now on an independent channel.

If your not sure you jumpered it correctly you can post back with the Make and Model of the HDD and we can find what the correct jumper position.
