Unhappy Cant change default monitor or update video drivers

    Hi guys,

I am seriously at the end of my tether (

My computer recently died due to a registry error. This made the system inoperable so I was left no choice but to format the hard drive and reload Windows XP. This I have done. I have also been on Windows Update site and downloaded eveything that was needed to bring me up to date - it took ages as you can imagine!!

I am finally finished. However, i am having major issues trying to update the driver for the video controller and I cannot change the setting from Default Monitor.

The computer is a Acer Aspire T120. I have been on their site and downloaded all the updated drivers and everything works except the update for the video/graphics! I have used your system scan and these are the results:

Sample template for the DAL Scanner

Everything is correct on there except NOTHING is listed under the "Video" section. This concerns me! Does it mean that is no longer operating correctly? Or that the driver isnt correct?

Please guys I desperately need some guidence. Im not a complete idiot when it comes to computers, but this has got me well and truely baffled!

    Your hopefully

    Rob

ACER makes this page hard to read but it should be your drivers:

    AcerPanAm.com

Trouble is it lists everything from SiS to ATI to NVIDIA.

Do you know what graphics card you have in there?

I think its an on board one. The trouble is, when i used your hardware acan, nothing is listed under the Video sections! Sure there would be something??

BTW - I have to use the Acer Euro site, which is wheer I have gotten all my driver updates. Not sure why the video drivers dont work. Maybe its damaged?

Without drivers there is no reply from your computer to the scanner.

The Acer page indicates that you may have either a SiS; ATI; or NVIDIA chip.

If you try a download and it is incorrect it will simply tell you that there is no hardware for this driver.

    I would start with SiS.

I just noticed that Acer page does not save the link. You need to choose: Select Product Line: Desktop > Aspire T120c

Here you will see a SiS driver as well as a SiS update. Try the driver first.

SIS VGA Driver Aspire T120c Windows XP

Don't know if this link will work but here is the direct: (attempt)

Okay. Tried the American site but no good.

I Have downloaded the drivers from Euro site here:

Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Desktop, Acer Aspire T120

The radion driver and the Nvidia drivers failed to install because the setup failed to find the hardware installed.

The S3 VGA Driver starts to load then come up with this error:

"Setup was unable to complete installation. Check progress log in Windows directory for more information"

This is what was in the Progress Log:

    =========== S3SETUP LOG FILE - Started at 19:18:46 on 3-18-2009 ===========
    S3Setup v1.00.16-JV (1.01.06) on Win XP
    bAllowReboot: TRUE
    bSilentReboot: TRUE
    bPromptReboot: TRUE
    bPromptSilentReboot: FALSE
    VendorID to find:5333
INF File Located at: C:\Documents and Settings\Rob\Desktop\Win2KXP\ps5333.inf
No display adapter for specified vendor can be detected, or hardware detection could not determine display adapter type.
    Hardware detect returned -4.
    DestroyTimerWindow returned an error!
-> Setup was unable to complete the installation. Check the progress log in your Windows directory for more details.

I think the S3 is the driver I need, but not sure what to do with the above information?? Any ideas?

"No display adapter for specified vendor can be detected, or hardware detection could not determine display adapter type."

What error did you get with the SiS driver I posted?

Also can you verify that the monitor plug is plugged in in a vertical orientation near the edge of the computer case and not in a horizontal orientation near the lower center of the case?

Sis driver also said Nodevice found.

The monitor is plugged in as it was to the side of the case vertically.

The monitor isnt the original one, but it was on the pc before everything went down and it worked perfectly.

The Monitor is also from Acer and is model AL1717p, which drivers are available from that Acer site here:

Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Monitor, Acer AL 1717

I have downloaded them, but I am confused what to do with them!! There is no exe file to set them up!! Do i just put them somewhere on my pc?

XP requires no drivers for your monitor. From the manual:

    6RIWZDUH ,QVWDOODWLRQ
    a) Microsoft Windows 95 / 98 / 2000
    If you are using Windows 95 , Windows 98 or Windows 2000 as an
operating system you have to set up the correct monitor driver
That being said I will do some more searching and get back to you.

Thank you. I really do apreciate it man.

I have been trying to sort this for 2 days and I just cant get past the video problem.

The computer works well and is very quick, but scrolling on the net is painful as it scrolls bit by bit.

Hopefully we can sort it. BTW - I rang Acer support and they said it looks like I have done everything they can think off, but they do offer a full "Recovery Disc Pack" for a mere £45 + VAT should I need it

Will see if ECS has any drivers or at least get an ID.
