Windows XP crashing
Hi
I realise this is an ongoing question but I have looked at Jephree's sticky and my event log covers a page and a half today! I have Windows XP SP3 and it has been getting slower and slower but this week the "Hanging" or "crashing" is turning me from theoldandgrey to theoldandwhite.
I have tried the hint about autorestart but cannot find it under Properties as suggested.
I could not system restore today - this is an ongoing problem as I clear all checkpoints, it works for a while and then will not. I got it to work in safe Mode today.
I have run both Spybot and Adaware and also have AVG and Zone Alarm all of which are up to date, run regularly and are showing no problems.
Please can someone help Many thanks

What exactly do you mean by "hanging or crashing"? What exactly happens?
When was the last time you opened the computer and cleaned it?
-
When I am working the program gives me a "Not Responding" warning and I have to close the program through the Task Manager. This can happen with almost any program from Word to one of several DTP/photo managing programs
I had a new internal hard drive in October and I applied the compressed air then and gave it a good clean out although it did not seem to have an obvious dust problem.
Thanks

Event Viewer
--------------------------------------------------
Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.
Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:
How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
Basic information on Event Viewer errors can be found here: EventID.Net

Thanks - I have done as suggested but I am all at sea!! I have 29 red crosses in Applications and 15 in System. They seem to refer to Application Hang or Error. I went to EventID.Net but there you lost me as I couldn't find/understand how to cure the problems. Would uninstalling all the programs and re-installing help? I obviously don't want to do that unnecessarily but if needs must I will.

Please post the Event ID # as well as the Source (app hang etc) and also the Description which you get by clicking on the line.
Many are likely to be the same repeated error.

OK. Will take some time to review that. Will post back ASAP.

Who is the manufacturer of your hard drive?
If you don't know look in the Device Manager under Disk drives +
Device Manager = rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager
Also try a disk check:
CHKDSK
--------------------------------------------------
Try running Check Disk:
Go to start Run... and type: cmd
Then type: chkdsk /r
You will be told the volume is in use do you want to run chkdsk on next boot? Type: Y and reboot.

My hard disk is Maxtor 6L160PO
I have run CHKDSK and all is OK
Thanks for your continued help
