Windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close

Hi there I really hope someone can help me. When ever I try to run a video file from windows explorer in windows media player 11 I get the message:Windows media player has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience. The technical data from the error report says:

    AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 11.0.5721.5145 ModName: fun_avcodec.dll
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000a6462

I tried reinstalling wmp and have tried using winamp, quicktime and real player to open the files and they all close the same way.

Even windows explorer sometimes sends me the same message.

I'v read other similar posts to find a fix but none of them seem relevant to my problem.

I have run windows defender to search for viruses but it says my computer is clean, is windows defender good enough to detect a virus that could be causing this? If not can you recommend one I can get hold of for free.

Please let me know if you need more info to help me.
    Thanks
    Spencer

What media programs do you have installed?

One possible "work-around" is run a search for fun_avcodec.dll

When found rename all finds to fun_avcodec.dll.BAK

If this should not resolve the issue you can go back and undo the rename.

    Cool.

Codecs are added by third parties and this one has had many issues.

Let us know if we can help further.

    1. First try to Download and install WMP 11 on your computer and then install.

    2. one of the best free avtivirus is AVG 8.0 you can download it and install on ur PC.
