    memory troubles what to do.

Recently i bought two 1gb sticks of pc 4200 ddr2 533mghz for a compaq sr2011wm desktop i can run one stick at a time and im fine or with the original 512mb stick but when i install both sticks i get a bsod error and the event error is 1003 at first i thought it was the version of xp i was using so i upgraded to xp64 corprate edition. and guess what same thing boots fully somtimes then just shuts off the cpu and reboots again then it starts to lose sys 32 files and corrupts now i know its the ram tried swapping checked slots all working went and ran memory tester through windows and individually they pass the test but when they are in together they fail cpuz says it reconises it as pc 5300 and the bios says its pc4200 the speed is 266mhz what is causing this and will buying new ram cure it im positive the ram is good but why wont it run in pairs its just funny is all i know compaq's and hp can be picky about ram but ive never come across this before so as for now im running just the gig and a half in the cpu runs great but i WANT MY FULL TWO GIGS ,LOL then im going to sell they say its a sellers market does this apply to cpu's,lol also i cleared the cmos and reset all bios defaults i know new ram is now going to be the only option but why is this happening.

Just for reference here are some HP links on your computer.

Product informationCompaq Presario Media Center SR2011WM Desktop PC

    Product Specifications

    Motherboard Specifications, RC410-M (Alhena)

Often when you bring a board to its max RAM it becomes more selective as to the RAM but as you say PC4200 is what is spec-ed.

On older boards density is often an issue at the max level but this machine is not that old I don't think.

What is the exact make and model of the RAM you are trying to use?

Are you over clocking your system? Try going into the BIOS and setting the settings to the manufacturer defaults. See your manual on how to do that. Did you two sticks of the same model? Did you follow the manufacturer's guidelines for choosing the RAM? Can you boot into safe mode? Have you considered contacting the manufacturer's tech support?

In my experience with XP if you are careful in what you run all of the time and turn off stuff that you don't need to run all of the time then it is hard to get anywhere near 2 gb of programs running unless you do heavy gaming, video editing, or pc virtualization. I turn off services I don't use and control the programs that like to run automatically with winPatrol. Doing this I don't even get anywhere 2 gb with Vista. If you're careful with what you allow run 1.5 gb might just be more than enough. The only real advantage to having 2 gb in XP is if you run 2 gb or programs at once most of the time.

FYI pertaining RAM you only need a 64 bit OS if you have 4 gb or more.

If this proble again and agan you can check it one-by-one that the both RAM Stick u purchased is working or not. if yes working then there may be problem with RAM Slots and may be you System only Support 1 GB of RAM not 2 GB so, make sure that your computer supports 2 gb RAM or Only 1 GB of Memory.
