    invalid drive u:

    Hi

I am installing some software on a laptop (Toshiba L300, Win XP pro, Dual core 2.0GHz, 2GB Ram)

I get an error message Invalid drive u: and the installation fails.

I followed an article in microsoft knowledge base to edit registry.

In shell folders there is an entry for personal which had u: in the data field.

The documents folder should be a network drive y: so I changed it to that.

The program installed but now when I try to open a document from the network documents folder it says I don't have permission.

    How can I fix this?

    Any help appreciated

    Regards Melissa

There is one of the best feature ion Toshiba laptop, but if you grantee / warranty then please try to contact you customer Service.

if outdated then make sure that the WIndows XP Pro CD is using is working Properly or not if working fine then make sure that there is any problem with your CD-ROM / DVD-ROM. Sometimes such types of problems persist but no mean and there is a feature in MS Windows XP Professional that if you want to change your Drive Latter then you can change it by right clinking on My Computer, Select Manage and then select Disk Management and dialog box appears on right side, from where you can change your preferred drive letter to on your own choice.

I have been thinking about this problem.

I cloned the drive from an identical computer registered to jbloggs, then copied this clone to this laptop changed the computer name, user name and network documents folder to asmith.

Some of the registry settings and document ownership is still jbloggs.

Is there something else I should have changed somewhere?

    Any help appreciated

    Regards Melissa

What you need to do is reinstall XP on that laptop itself.

As to changing the original name you cannot. This is done during the setup of xp and not changeable.

You cannot clone drives and move them about like that.

can I reinstall over the top, or will it have to be a fresh install?

An upgrade or repair install should be fine.

You will need a unique and not otherwise used Product Key.

    Repair Install XP
    --------------------------------------------------
    1) Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press the Enter key

    2) You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed

    3) The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to "Repair the selected Windows XP installation." Press "R".

    4) Windows XP will copy the necessary files to your Hard Drive to begin the installation and will then reboot. You will see the message that informs you to "Press any key to boot the CD". Do Not press any keys this time just wait a few seconds and the Windows Startup Screen will be displayed. Following this you will be greeted by the Windows XP Setup Screens.

    5) When Setup has completed you should find all of your previously installed applications and settings are intact.

I tried the restore disk and it said it was going to delete everything so I aborted.

I don't know what to try next.
