XP crash - reinstall problems - lost data
OS Windows XP Proff SP3. -
I've had several problems since my system crashed three days ago. I attempted a 'repair' but this option was not available and reluctantly re-installed the whole system again. I have lost almost 40% of the data together with programmes, correspondence, family history etc. I can't even find MS word
Strange as it may seem I can actually 'see' some programmes using Windows Explorer but I'm unable to resurrect them. One item which bugs me is the loss of audio/sound functions. After running a Sound Trouble shooter, checking the volume settings, I received the following message: - There are no active mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and other hardware and click add hardware. The only speakers I have are intergrated with my monitor.
I have checked the Device Manager and located the audio drivers, which are indicated in Properties as 'This device is working properly' I have located the folder using W Explorer in Programmes, opened up the folder and can see the install icon, amongst other items, but get no response when I attempt activate it.
I would greatly appreciate some assistance.

You need to reload your drivers.
What is the make and model of the computer?
If custom built what is the make and model of the motherboard.
If you do not know you can try our scan at the top of the page.
Also Word is part of Office which would also need to be reinstalled.

Well you say custom but that appears to be a Dell computer.
These should be all your drivers unless the motherboard was changed:
Drivers & Downloads

Sorry jephree.
It was my son in law's pc which I inherited and added programmes and peripherals as required. Probably not the best thing to do. I've downloaded and saved the drivers but would appreciate a wee bit of guidance with the next stage.
The excellent link you posted to the Dell website has given me a better understanding of what I need to do to rectify some of my problems.
I explored the Dell Support section and saved the sections applicable to my lack of knowledge. I have also printed hard copies to asist me with the installation of the drivers. I actually installed the sound/audio driver which is working perfectly.
Hopefully I will succeed in repairing my system but will post again if I am 'derailed' again.
Thank you

Thanks for the update. Let us know how it goes.

I can hear you say, "That was quick".
Just returned to check the procedure for Installing Drivers in Correct Order. First driver to be installed is the DSS driver which is located in the Configuration Uttilities Category on the Driver and Downloads page. I am having difficulty locating this driver and do not wish to proceed until I can resolve this issue.
-
There really is no correct or incorrect order.
I cannot find that category on the page I linked to:
Drivers & Downloads
Can you clarify where you are looking? Thanks.

The item is in the Technical Support section in Table of Contents. Installing Drivers in the Correct Order. Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS) - A vital utility that provides critical updates and patches for the operating system. If you are reinstalling Windows or updating all drivers, it is important that this software be installed first. This is located under the System and Configuration Utilities Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
Dell - Technical Support
Sorry about this. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious.
-
Oh I see.
Did you try this option: Method 1 Click here to lookup your drivers by service tag. Recommended
The driver page I posted does not list such a utility.
Would appear to me to be all XP updates such as SP3 etc. Dell's version of Windows Update. That is my read on it.
"This is located under the System and Configuration Utilities Category on the Drivers and Downloads page."
Again I do not see such a category for your model but maybe the above ID method will take you elsewhere.
It could be the item under: Patches and Fixes.
