Error Msg re: Common Client User Session

Running XP home edition sp2 on a Dell Dimension tower system.
Several issues, including very slow startup, non-functioning Spyware Blocker, wireless NIC that's stopped working etc, but believe all may be related to an error msg that appears about 5 mins after boot up (it takes at least that long to run the boot up).....
Msg says the system "has encountered a problem with the Common Client User Session"....it's one of those windows that offers the chance to send an error report to Microsoft.
No idea what the 'CCUS' is nor how to trouble shoot it to see whether it is the cause of the broken anti-Spyware SW or the inability to get the wireless NIC to start up.
...Any ideas ? Would the technical (mainly hex) content of the error msg help ?

One suggestion I see is this:

"The Common Client (ccApp.exe) is part of your Norton Antivirus software.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling it, or if it won't uninstall go to the
Symantec web site for manual uninstallation instructions."

    Many things to read here:

    Common Client User Session

Did these problems start after installing SP2? Or any new hardware or software changes prior to these problems? Was Norton shut down while installing SP2?

Progress ! - I reloaded Norton AV, and I no longer get the Common Client User Session error window - THANKS !!
However, I still can't get to the web.
I know my cable modem and router work OK - I can use the same link with my work laptop (wired and wireless both work fine) - but neither wired or wireless works from my Dell home system.
I realize this is a tough one to diagnose remotely but here's what I've tried and the symptoms I see...any help gratefullly accepted !

    - Tried with IE and also with Netscape, same thing, 'page cannot be located' or similar. Have reinstalled Netscape, same thing.
    - Light above ethernet port on router indicates PC connection is recognized by the router.
    - Network adapter card is 'enabled' and 'functioning properly' according to device manager.
    - I've removed driver and card and reinstalled both (more than once!)
    - I've tried the NIC in a different PCI slot
    - LED indicators on NIC: Green is on, orange flickers - sometimes in a regular pulse (not passing data ?) but sometimes with the irregluar flicker (that normally shows it's passing data ?).
    - I've tried connecting from my dell home system both with and without my work laptop running concurrently thru the same router/cable modem set-up.

    ...help ....stuck !!

Worth a try to see if you have the RasMan problem:

    1. Open the registry editor and navigate to
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP]

    2. Right click on the key and choose to export the key as a
    precaution.

    3. Under the EAP key you will find 4 keys [13], [4], [25] , [26]

    4. Right Click on the key
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25]
    and choose to delete

    5. Right Click on the key
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26]
    and choose to delete

    6. Reboot the computer

Sorry, no good. Deleted keys as suggested, same symptoms.

Any idea what else I could try - short of taking a chain saw to the damn thing !

ok......I'm very out of my personal experience here but I can still search

As to the LEDS the amber is a problem (I think). Usually passing data would show one solid green & one blinking green. (At least on my modem).

What are the exact specs of your NIC card? Have you checked its' manual or website for trouble-shooting?

Are the LEDS on this card? or?

Are you still getting error messages?

    Boot up still slow?

What about that non-functioning spyware blocker?

Have you looked in Event Viewer for errors?

Did these problems start after installing SP2?

The LEDS - Agree, should see a green one

What are the exact specs of your NIC card? Have you checked its' manual or website for trouble-shooting? - Yes, the Device Manager says it's functioning properly

Are the LEDS on this card ? - The Ethernet conectionis built in, it's not a separate PCI card.

Are you still getting error messages? No, the CCUS error was cleared by the Symantec re-install

Boot up still slow? NOt too bad, I think the Spyware hanging was the cause of much of it.

What about that non-functioning spyware blocker? OK now.

Have you looked in Event Viewer for errors?
Yes....there are tons in both the Application and System files:
Most show a 'source' of DCOM or Service Control Manager.
The DCOM ones all say "The server {ton of hex characters idenifying the server I guess} did not register with DCOM with the required timeout"

Service Control Manager ones are a mix
Some say "The IPSEC Services service terminated with the following error: The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized."

Some say "The Task Scheduler service terminated with the following error: Not enough resources are available to complete this operation.

Some say "The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147952506" (this # is always the same)

There are dozens of all the above 3 msgs logged in the last 2 weeks, and others notfying of an error on a cdrom

Did these problems start after installing SP2?
Yes, but but worked fine for several weeks after SP2 was installed.

Here are google groups searches for your event errors.

It seems that these errors "go together" for many others too.

I have not browsed all the threads, you can probably pick up on details pertaining to your issues better than I at this point. Anyway here ya go:

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147952506

The Task Scheduler service terminated with the following error: Not enough resources are available to complete this operation.

The IPSEC Services service terminated with the following error: The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized

The server did not register with DCOM with the required timeout"

Good luck & let us know if you find anything relavent there

Thanks for the pointers...there looked to be many similarities between the info contained at the links provided and what I am seeing. I used tehs elinks, and several others found during my own research to do the following:

    - Deleted entire Norton suite
    - Deleted Spyware Stormer software completely
    - Ran the regedit to delete the references to SYMTDI & NISDRV as recomended at
    http://www.bl.com/moshe/text/quiddit...on_errors.html
    - ran the Netshell reset cmd suggested at
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,562420,00.asp
    - ran the WinSock fix suggested at
    http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/internetaccess/winsock2fix.html
    - ran the WinSockXP fix suggested at
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

...all to no avail. Many hours and about two dozen reboots later, I'm still at SQ1.
Trouble is, many of the posts on the sites you linked me to suggest that not even a re-install of XP worked ! Not sure what else to try...Anything ? ANYONE ??
    Help !!

sorry I don't know what else to search

just btw: if it's an xp problem i can't imagine why a full re-install wouldn't clear things up. although sometimes it has some hitches; such as the RasMan problem i mentioned earlier, as i found out by my own re-install & inability to connect to the internet. microsoft support pointed out the RasMan which cleared everything for me.

also; have you tried posting this problem to:

    microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web ?

via start - help & support - get support...windows xp newsgroups

    Good luck!
