    error msgs

I have a compaq armada e700 laptop. I am trying to upgrade to win xp from win 98se.
This computer did have xp on it before, but I lost it. I loaded xp by tricking it from an 98 or 98se load, by removing the loading cd and putting in the xp disk. It worked. But that was over a year ago and I don't remember how I did it.

Now, while xp is loading from 98se and about half way thru, I get this error:

"Insufficient resourses exist to complete the API.

I checked with MS but I still do not understand what they say..

I need help getting past this.

Also, I did not have to do this before when I went from 98se to xp ,but am told that I need to change the bios to accept xp.

    I need to know :

2.] where and how do I get a new bios and
    3 .] how do I install it.

I went to hp and found the bios, but everything under that topic, did not relate to the bios update, only drivers for video, audio, etc.

I do not have a way to connect this unit to the network at this time. So everything MUST be done either with a floppy or a burnt cd.

    help please

If XP ran on this machine before, you do NOT need to upgrade your bios.

... putting in the xp disk
Is this XP "disk" a retail XP Home or Pro CD?

If so, is it a "full" install or Upgrade CD?

If Upgrade, do you have a 98 CD?

Given the above is true, have you tried booting with the XP CD and installing fresh? (ie; Removing all existing partitions on the machines hard disk and creating/formatting a new primary partition during the setup. This approach means you will loose everything on the hard disk unless you've backed up anything you want.)
