    Laptop and scanner help please

    Hi:
I have a dell printer/scanner. It prints but wont scan. I've asked Dell and they say there is software for the printer and the scanner. I've linked the scanner to another laptop and it works fine, so why wont it work on mine?
Is something blocking the software for the scanner?

It worked fine until recently, the only things I've changed is to upgrade IE 7 to IE 8, and updated Mozilla Firefox and MSN.

I would be so grateful if someone had any idea what might be causing this.

Often All-in-one printers use more than one driver for different functions. A driver is a little piece of software that allows the computer to "talk" to a device. Open 'Device Manager' to check if the driver is working.

    To open Device Manager:
    Click 'Start'
    Click 'Run'
Type 'devmgmt.msc' (I am using Vista and I can't remember whether this works on XP)
    Press the enter key.
Check for any devices with a warning sign next to them.

The warning sign means that Windows has detected a problem with this device.

Also what is the model of the printer?

Apologies, I have been away for some weeks. I am still having this problem, it is a DELL 810 printer/scanner and will do everything bar let me save an image to my computer.

I have checked the device manager and there are no warning signs there.

I have Kodak share on Limewire and Mobile phone tools on my PC but cant find what is stopping my printer from working properly.

    Any ideas?

I've tried uninstalling and re installing but it hasn't worked. My local shop says the only way to be sure is to completely uninstal the enitire computer then instal the dell printer.
They say the charge will be about £65, does anyone think I should go ahead with that?

I have no idea what they mean by "uninstall the entire computer"

If they were suggesting you reinstall Windows you can do it yourself for free.

Dan Penny is currently absent due to illness so perhaps another member or myself will review your threads but just for now I'd say stay away from your local shop.

Thanks for the reply. I think what they are suggesting is to take off all the sites I have on my PC such as Limewire, Kodak, Mobile phone tools etc. Then they say there wouls be nothing blocking the software for the printer/scanner.
I wont do anything until I'm sure. I was thinking of buying a new printer/scanner but what If I had the same problems?
My Dell 810 printer works fine apart from I cant scan and save to computer.

Such suggestions are all things you can do yourself.

To pay anyone to do such things is absurd.

As your issue is limited to scanning it could be the hardware or a simple software issue.

What exactly happens? What verbatim error do you receive?

When I try to scan and save to computer, a box comes up saying "Scan was not succesful"
and then underneath it says try changinf cables which I've done countless times.
It will print and I can photcopy too, It just wont scan and save to computer.
Many thanks for your help, I'm totally lost.
