    Unhappy Help re-installing XP...

My emachine got a real bad "antivirus 2009" Virus that recked havoc on the machine, from random shutdowns, disconnecting my wireless connection after 5-10 mins and not finding signal until I restart, not letting me login to other user pc accounts, totally not letting me open firefox and when it does, crashing in 2 minutes, blue screens of death etc. Tried everything under the sun to rid the infection but it always comes back. Its time to do a system restore.

I put the emachine restore disk in the first DVD/CD drive, restarted, selected to boot from that drive, it says "cd rom drive number not found system restore stopped. press a key to continue" so I tried the disk in the second DVD/CD drive, booted from it- it takes me to a black screen with blinking cursor and just sits. So I tried a Windows XP CD, tried to boot from both drives and I get the same black screen/blinking cursor. The drives work fine when the desktop boots, I tried the disks after it boots and the windows xp install box comes up, says the version on the disk is older than the one on the pc, please reboot from the drive to reinstall this version. Really stuck here!

Keep in mind both dvd drives are connected via PCI. I think its more of this problem, but IDK what its doing this time: http://www.d-a-l.com/help/general-ha...nt-let-me.html

The blinking cursor indicates the BIOS cannot find a boot drive.

Are you sure your Master CD drive is set in the BIOS as the first boot device?

As to the latter error that is caused by having SP2 (probably) on the computer but only SP1 (or no SP) on the CD. Windows will never let you downgrade.

First off you need to boot that CD then either you will get past this error or else then you will need to format the drive first.

I didn't see your edit but yes it appears to be a very similar issue.

    Almost exactly the same.

Have you tried all the steps we went thru in that other thread?

aha! you'll have to forgive me, Im a little slow at times. Connected the CD drive to the master, slaved the HD, and it reinstalled the OS without a hitch and all is virus free so far! Props again Jephree!!!
