    Unhappy unknown publisher

I am trying to get on a chatroom that I have been usings for over a month now, but can't do it. My cousin upgraded my computer with a bunch of antiviruses and security systems and now when i go to the chat room this message pops up. "Windows has blocked ths software because it can't verify the publisher." Then under it is this: Name: 404html.
Publisher:Unknown Publisher. Windows will block software when it cannot verify the publisher I know the lady personally that has the website. Can you please tell me how to get this message off my computer so I can talk to my new friends?
    Thanks Donna

    See if this helps:

Windows has blocked this software because it can't verify the publisher | Windows Reference

If not what software did your cousin install?

You may need to grant permissions in the firewall etc. or remove the software.

I followed the exact same thing that was on the site and then went back to the chatroom, but the same message came back up.
He installed secunia, AVG, and something about windows updates #3.
He was suppose to be helping, but he has really made me mad.

Probably XP SP3. AVG should not be an issue: that is an anti-virus. Unless you already had one then conflicts could occur. Secuna could be an issue.

If you get him back perhaps he can help you through the settings of those programs.

If you want to do it yourself you can try a few things:

    1) Turn off this new software: click the icons in your Task Bar down by the clock. Choose End Process or Exit. (I would leave AVG running if that is your only anti-virus). Turn off (exit) Secunia. SP3 is not an issue here.

    2) If that doesn't work go to START > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Secunia > Remove

    3) If that doesn't work go to START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Here you will find a calendar with dates to restore your computer. Choose a date prior to the changes that were made.

The problems using the family or neighborhood computer guy is always illustrated when something goes wrong. The actions you describe he did seem appropriate - using well known products with good reputations. If your security defenses prior to that were deficient, then the inconvenience of blocked access is a better problem than being exposed to identity theft, the computer commandeered by badguys, or worse!

What prompted him to do the upgrades when he did? Were you having other issues? What other security applications are running?

Sadly, with so much done at once, it is impossible to know what broke your access. Is this the only site you are having problems with? Only chat room? Are you 200% sure the URL (site address) you are entering is correct? Please understand that badguys visit chat rooms too - especially if popular with young users - and pretend to be your best bud.

That's good, you can verify the site is up and running then, but it does not prove her site has not been compromised. Can you access this chat room from another computer with no problems?

I use AVG on my main systems. I don't think it would be Secunia - assuming you are talking about Secunia PSI - that is a neat program that is extremely helpful in making sure you are aware of new updates for all your programs, including drivers - I run it every few weeks - more as a status verification check. As jephree noted, you can disable it. You can also set it to not run at startup, but manually like I do. That said, I agree with him - if the problem started after you installed it, try uninstalling it. You can re-install it later, ensuring (as always) to use the Custom Install option to disable or not install any options not wanted, and set configuration.

If following jephree's suggestions above do not resolve the problem, I would purge the hard drives of clutter using Windows (XP or Vista) Disk Cleanup, ATF Cleaner or CCleaner. If using CCleaner, uncheck option to install Yahoo toolbar during installation. Before first use, go to Options > Settings > Advanced and ensure Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours is unchecked.

Note: Know your site credentials (user name and password) for sites you frequent before cleaning; you may have to login again at next visit.

Download and install Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM) then scan as follows:
    Check for updates before scanning,
Select Perform quick scan > Scan,
When complete, click OK, then Show Results,
Ensure all is selected, and click Remove Selected,
When complete, save the log in Notepad to a convenient place for future reference.
If still no luck, I would "Reset" Internet Explorer and see what happens. This is done through Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. This option takes IE back to original default settings. It also removes 3rd party add-ons, a very common source of conflicts. If you have installed any special toolbars or add-ins like IEPro or IE Spell, you will have to reinstall them - a minor inconvenience - but it give you the opportunity to again, use the Custom Install option to install only what you want and need.

Thank you all for your help. The only way I could get my computer back to normal was to go to systems restore and restore it back to the way it was.
Now I need an anti-virus. Can you tell me if there are any free anti-virus' and how to go about logging on to them?
    Thank you,
    Donna

AVG is good and should not have been the cause of your problem.

    Try it again:

AVG Free - Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition for Windows XP and Vista
