Question notebook to tv movie viewing help please

I am using my new samsung nc10 netbook connected to my 37" lcd tv and have set resolution to tv as 1280 x 1024 as recomended by tv manufacturer. I am now able to view my desktop in full screen and also web pages (although they have to be moved left to right). When viewing a movie on my netbook screen i am able to view in 100% full screen through either WMP or VLC, but on the tv i cannot view without black bars top and bottom.
I have tried different resolution settings but this makes no difference. I am selecting the correct aspect ratio in the players. Is there something else that maybe i could try.
    Very grateful for any tips.
    Thank you.

    1280 x 1024 is the 4 x 3 aspect of a normal full size tele.

Most films nowadays are made in wide screen thereby to be shown in correct aspect would leave a black bar top and bottom.

When viewed on notebook, it maybe that it is expanded width wise, hence it will also expand slightly to fill black space.

Some televisions use varius settings to correct for black bands

    thanks for the info.
if i burn the movie to dvd and select 16.9 on the player it does fill the screen though.
also when viewing say the BBCi player on the laptop it is full screen, but not on the tv.
wish i could fill the screen somehow.
    thanks again.

You can try setting the tv res to 1280 x 720 if possible.

This would give it the right aspect ratio.

as I said if your laptop has a normal aspect, not widescreen, then some of the pictures on each side must be lost, if viewing a widescreen film.

The other way television people do it, is have a setting built in to the tv display, that keeps the centre at the right aspect, but stretches the picture toward the side.

Check ypur TV manual, and try various settings.

    All the best.gs
