    D drive

    i have a desktop with the d drive not working. I put in a disk, the green light flashes about 10 times then nothing. I took out the drive and put in another one and the same result. So i dont think that it is the drive itself being faulty. Any suggestions?

    Hi, But-Know-Enough-To-Ask and Welcome.

    When did it stop working? And what kind of drive and what kind of disk? DVD drive? CD drive? Music disk? DVD movie? Any optical drive, whether CD or DVD should be able to play a plain music CD without any special drivers other than XP's plug n play drivers. Can you do that?

    Verify the Master/Slave/CS jumper is properly set, and the drive is properly positioned as Master or Slave on the cable, as determined by the jumper. If all good there, do you see the drive under My Computer? In Device Manager?

    On the devise manger window >> right click and remove

    Let's hold off on sending any registry fixes anywhere. Sorry Mike, while well intentioned, I am sure, you have no reputation here, or anywhere that I can see, to be making suggestions like that.

    You are right, however, about chkdsk, if this is a HD. My mistake for assume an optical. Let's see what were working with first.

    I actually uninstalled it and then did a reboot. The wizard said that "Driver not installed." "Some problems occured and driver may not run properly." Well its not running at all now.

    I put in a disk, the green light flashes about 10 times then nothing.
    To me, this indicates an optical drive.

    EDIT:
    I just saw your visitors note in my public profile. Desktop machine, but now I too am wondering (based upon your wording in that note) if this is indeed an optical or hard disk.

    Per Digerati;
    do you see the drive under My Computer? In Device Manager?
    If you don't see it there, do you see it during POST (Power On Self Test)? ie; Does your machines bios recognize the device?

    I actually uninstalled it and then did a reboot.
    Do you mean in Device Manager? If so, then my question re; POST is moot.

    I am sorry but i really dont know if it is optical or not. My device manager listed it as a sony cdrwdvd crx 3100ee. When i right clicked on it, the option of uninstall appeared. So i did thinking that once i reboot it will reinstall. Well, again the wizard said that it did not install properly.
