    What anti-virus should I have?

Just been cleaning stuff from computer and can anyone tell me just what programs I need for anti-virus and malware, there seems to be so many free ones I don't know just what and how many I need.

I have Spy-Bot which is working fine, I also have Spyware Blaster which it's telling me needs to be up-dated so I have to un-install and then install lastest version! not sure if I really need to though. I have F-Surcure anti-virus programme. Also have Spy-ware Guard but that is not working for some reason, and It will not un-install from computer!.

Do I need ad-ware removers? or anything else. I'm confussed.

    Many thanks.

    Hello Sally,

You dont need 3 antispyware programs running as these may conflict with each other I would just keep spybot and get rid of the others. Make sure your antivirus and antispyware are up to date, if you are wanting to get rid of F-secure and get a new antivirus then I would sugest Kaspersky, Norton or NOD 32.

If you need any help removing any of this software just ask ;-)

Thanks for that I have just un-installed Spyware Blaster but cannot un-install spyware guard? I get the message

"Spywareguard Uninstall has dectected that SWG is currently running.
please close all instances of it now.

To exit SWG double click on the red SG icon in system tray, choose exit from the file menu, press yes on the resulting message box"

I have no idea what all this means?

Where is the system tray? and don't have anything else open so how is it still running?

I am happy with F-Secure seems to pick up lots of stuff for me, do I need ad-aware? or is this the same as Spy-Bot.

Sorry for so many questions, I wish I knew what I was doing!!!!!

The System Tray, more correctly called the "Notification Area", is the area down in the lower right of your desktop next to the clock that contains a bunch of icons for programs currently running.

Ad-Aware and Spybot used to be the only one-two punch you needed to counter spyware. Sadly, they are not as effective as they used to be.

I like and use AVG which includes an AV and AS. I also use Comodo firewall, and I run supplemental scans with MBAM. See my sticky, Cleaning Out Malware for some ideas to create your own security suite and some guidelines for "practicing safe computing".
