What exactly where you doing when it froze? When you booted up did it say anything about being in safe mode? Are you getting an error code?

Did you actually shut down the computer or did you just suspend it or put it in hibernation, etc. Some problems are cleared by rebooting the computer instead of suspending, etc. Otherwise I'm not sure about your problem. A reinstall would solve your problem & in some case installations of windows become so corrupted that only a reinstall will correct the problem. However thats the most extreme measure & I don't know what else to do. Maybe someone else will. What I do know (future note) is that leaving the computer running for significant periods of time (such as an hour) while frozen is at the very least not a good idea. You had a problem then & continuing to run the computer with that problem could have corrupted windows.

I shut it down and then i turned it back on, and then thats when i relised about the 98 look of the computer. Would a recvoery disc help by any chance.

Sorry its been awhile. A recovery disk from a manufacturer would probably just allow a reinstall of Windows & the programs that came with it which would wipe out the partition that windows is installed on. A disk from Microsoft has a recovery console thats command line only & for advanced users; I've never been able to figure out how to use it.

Sometimes PC are weird & have unexplainable problems that magically go away but don't hold your breath. Not to put a curse on it but something might still be wrong with it. My computer has been freezing on login lately so I'll be reinstalling it tomorrow. Sometimes XP just needs a good re installation.

Try boot laptop using the xp boot Cd and run the Chkdsk /r command.
Since you powered off the laptop first time when it freeze by holding down the power button to shut the system down manually, this may caused some file system change unsaved.
HDD file system error may cause the system slow or freeze problem.
Run the chkdsk /r from DOS may help you correct the problem.
Hope this helps!

I've had something like that recently. It happens every once in awhile for me but restarts would cure it. But after a few weeks, my hard disk literally died on me. Couldn't afford to have a disk platter recovery done so I lost all my data there. That was a real heartache.
Better get yours check dude.
