XP installation problems
Hi
Just upgraded a PC
XP SP2
Core 2 duo E8400 3GHz
4 GB DDR2-800
Samsung 160GB SATA2 HDD
ASUS P5k SE/EPU m/b
ATI 4850 HD graphics card
There are a couple of issues.
1. On boot up after listing devices a message comes up 'Unknown CPU detected. BIOS update is required to unleash its full power'.
Press F1 to resume.
The CPU is correctly listed in the devices before reaching this point so why the message?
2. So I press F1 and start the installation of XP. Goes ok until a window pops up.
'The file 'asms' on windows SP2 CD is needed'. I check the windows disc on another PC and the file is there!
So I copy the file 'asms' onto a cd and put it in new pc. Accepts it ok. Put in windows cd and installation continues.
Another window pops up 'File NT5INF.CAT on windows SP2 CD is needed'.
Searched for this file on windows disc in the other PC but the closest it came up with was NT5INF.CA_.
Looked in the windows directory in the other PC found the correct file and copied it to cd.
Put the cd in the new PC but it would not accept the file.
Now I'm stuck. Can anyone shed any light on these problems, thanks.

Assuming the installation CD is not damaged and a legal Windows disk, I would reset the BIOS and start over. If it failed again, get an RMA on the motherboard.
Did you upgrade your PSU too?
-
It is a legal copy of Windows and I have no reason to believe it is damaged.
How do I reset the BIOS?
What is an RMA?
I put in a new Corsair 520W psu.

To reset the BIOS, check your motherboard manual. Generally, you temporarily short two pins with a jumper, or you pull the battery for a minute.
RMA is Return Material Authorization - or what you need to return stuff that does not work.

Resetting the bios did not help but I noticed I was having a bit of trouble with the dvd drive so replaced it and hey presto windows loaded ok!
I updated the bios as well and that got rid of the first problem so it's all systems go.
Thanks for your help.
