I need to put a recovery dvd to my usb stick should my new netbook need to be recovered.
i can get to the bios page by pressing F8 but the i am not sure what to select next.
my manual says "enter bios set up and set the first boot device to the ODD then save changes"
could someone make this a bit clearer please.

Well, I am not sure how to put the DVD to your stick. But I think we can help with your other issue.

I don't think F8 is what you want to be pressing - that is how you signal Windows to boot into Safe Mode. The BIOS Setup Menu is accessed during the boot process BEFORE the hardware knows anything about the operating system. Depending on the make and model of computer or motherboard, you must enter the BIOS Setup Menu by pressing typically the Del key or F1 key - not F8. Then you can check your boot order, date and time, system temperatures, etc.

I've not had my quota of coffee this morning, but I don't know what you mean by ODD - unless that's the optical disk drive. If that is the case, what that setting will do is cause you to get another prompt during the boot process you will need to watch for. Usually in the lower left corner, it will say press any key to boot to CD. You have about 5 seconds to press a key before it times out and moves on to the next boot device, typically the normal boot drive.
