Hi caddy and Welcome!
Ummm, that is how it has been since the mouse was given a second button 20 years ago! You drag and drop with the left, and select options through the "context-menu" with the right button.I am unable to open any programmes from the desktop using the Left mouse click on the Icon, however if I right mouse click i can select Open from the drop down list, the programme will then open.
If you have seen it the other way, then it is because somebody changed the default mouse button properties in Control Panel or with a mouse setup utility, perhaps to a "left-handed" mouse.

Actually i have just sorted the problem, it was the wireless mouse that was actually faulty, although the left mouse button worked, it wouldn't work on the desktop, neither would it allow me to close the PC down using, START, TURN OFF COMPUTER, but would let me close from the TASK MANAGER, USERS, LOG OFF, On any Excel workbook (Office 2007) Clicking the large Office button on the top left hand of the sheet, instead of showing the drop down list of available commands, it just Quit Excel. I purchased a new cheap PS/" Mouse and the problem was solved.
Sweet! I am glad you got it sorted out and thanks for the follow-up.
BTW, every one using a wireless anything should have a wired backup - mouse, keyboard, Ethernet port, cable and network access port (4-port router, for example) to connect to.
