Phantom busy phone line?
Hi! For the last month or so I have been having difficulty connecting to the internet (AOL, yeah yeah I know I know) and they swear the problem is not related to AOL. When the software goes to dial, a window pops up and says "Modem Event Monitor" the message in the window says "The phone line is in use." But thats impossible because I have checked the line 400 times, I dont have to dial "9", I dont have voicemail, and half the time it has no problem dialing and sometimes I has to try 8-10 times to connect and it finally is able to dial out. Oh, and I checked the line and there isnt any damage to it. Did I recently download some evil thing thats just toying with my connection?
Please help me! Im a starving college student!

are you using an extention lead between the phone socket and the modem?

Well, its plugged into the second line to my fax machine, but Iv always had it plugged into the faxmachine....years and years. I would have to unplug and replug lines all day if I didnt, could there be something going on with that?
