I recently reinstalled windows xp and of the few problems i have had, one of them was the computer not recognizing an audio device. i have a dell dimension 3000. went to the dell website and have been attempting to download the driver and everytime i try to run it after the download an error message pops up saying "32-bit self-extractor has encountered a problem and needs to close".
On the website it says to download drivers in order when you have reinstalled windows or else some problems may arise, so i began to do that thinking that was the problem. I successfully installed the desktop system software driver and then attempted the next driver, the "chip-set", and received the same error message as with the audio. I'm not sure if the order is all that important considering I was able to install the wireless network card driver a few days ago and supposedly that is further down the list...
I don't know if it is of any importance but I did get new logitech speakers to replace my original ones about a year and a half ago. As far as I have found I have no discs that have anything to do with audio devices.
All I want is some volume someone please help!!
If you have a CD then try to install the drivers from it. You must get the model exactly when downloading from the website. Also do you have the 32 bit or 64 bit version of XP? What service pack do you have?
i have service pack 2, no CDs...can't remember if any came with the computer or not, but regardless i don't have any relating to audio anymore
As far as a know all manufacturers include cds with the computer. That's probably the only way to install windows again. There is also a disc with all the drivers for the computer.
A number of manufacturers no longer supply OS/Restore/Recover CD's with thier machines. If the machine was purchased "pre-loaded" with XP/Vista, some/most provide an option to create restore CD's/DVD's, and you are urged to do so before you start installing programs etc.As far as a know all manufacturers include cds with the computer.
case7715,
Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system. Post that information.
Also look under MOTHERBOARD.
Post what is listed for your Motherboard (make/model) and the Chipset description.
