    can't change screen resolution

I just reinstalled windows xp and the screen resolution is at the lowest setting and cannot be changed.

I followed some help instructions to go into display properties->settings->advanced->monitor, and that I should then click properties and update my driver. Unfortunately default is the monitor type selected and I cannot change it, and I am unable to click on the properties button.

I also went to the Dell website and tried to download the driver needed, and once downloaded it instructed me to install the driver with the same directions given to me above, and again I could not select monitor properties.

If it helps, I have a Dell E153FP Color Monitor and my computer is a Dell Dimension 3000. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

XP has built in just generic video drivers in the sense that they will work minimally with all video cards or integrated graphics which is why after a fresh install of xp you will only get a small screen resolution & a terrible refresh rate. To get the best full use of your graphics you need to go ahead & install the manufacturer's drivers specific to your computer.
