Red face Game download error messages!

Hi, I'm a new subscriber here. Just happened to fall into this website and hope it's a keeper.
I've had a frustrating problem downloading games at worldwinner since I got this new computer 4 months ago. I've asked my manufacturer (Dell), the game website itself and my ISP for help and instructions at least a dozen times each until they don't even reply to me anymore. Still, the problem persists. I've tried to figure it out myself only to result in having 2 crashes on my computer and having to restart the entire system from scratch both times.
When I ordered my computer I specified that the 2 main things I use a computer for are emails and playing online games. Since I had to reprogram my computer I don't even have my emails anymore as well as not getting to play my favorite games.
OK, enough whining. Here is the problem.
When I click on "Play Game" at Worldwinner.com, it begins the downloading process but just when it looks like the downloading is finished I get 2 error messages, "Error:downloading File" and "Error retrieving game configuration".
Sometimes the whole website disappears and I find myself back to my desktop.
I have closed all applications and programs including firewall, anti-spyware, pop up blockers and I've lowered my "Security" to "Medium", and even to "Low Medium" in some areas, but none of this helps the situation.
I also have a problem when I try to play games at Pogo.com (worldwinner's affiliate). I can download a game there and play it until "intermission" but then, when another game should start to play, my computer gets frozen and I cannot play another game. I have to re-enter the website in order to play one game again.
I have Windows XP, lots of memory and IE 6. (By the way, my computer says I have IE 6 and I have the blue E icon in my programs list and desktop, BUT it is NOT listed in my add/remove programs. could that be part of the problem? also, I don't have the very latest IE program because I have dial-up and was told it would be too strong for dial-up. what is your opinion?)
It seems there should be some simple solution but why is it no one knows? do you??????
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Janinky,

    Firstly, Welcome to the forum.

I think part of your problem is dial-up, but the fact that your computer is only four months old, I would insist that Dell do more for you as your system would be well within your warranty period.

How much RAM have you got? you do not say, just that you
    have lots of memory?
Please, in more detail give us your system specs, so others can help you also.

    kind regards,

Thank you for your fast reply. If the problem lies in the dial-up system, I'll be quite upset with the manufacturer because all this was explained and set up in my order.
My computer has 2GB and has 282GB free space, speed 667, memory capacity 1024, 2.00GHz and 1.99 GB RAM if any of that makes sense to you (it doesn't to me). It's an Intel (R) Pentium (R), Inspiron 530s. I have IE 6 and service pack 2 and it says version 2002 where I got the information. I hope that doesn't mean the computer was built in 2002.
I forgot to add in my first post that I can download SOME of the games on the website but not ALL of them. It's my favorite games that I can't download. I could download most of them on my OLD computer, which included my favorites, with dial up, but not all of them. At that time I thought it was because I had Windows 98. It's one of the reasons why I got the new computer. This is the mystery to me. What do you think???

    Hi Janinky,

I did not explain myself correctly to you I am sorry.....what I meant was that having dial-up instead of say ADSL broadband or cable would make downloading games a much longer task for you.

By the quote above, do you mean you have reformatted your system since you purchased it?

That is okay. You are referring to IE 7 I think and I do not have it either thankfully, and no that is not your problem. IE 6.0 is fine, but many will disagree with me. My computers have it and I don't want to install IE7 at this stage.

Let us do one simple test of your OS (operating system)
Have you got the CD of Windows XP/SP2? All newly supplied computers by law here in Australia have to supply the OS CD with the computer on delivery. If you have and you will need it to do this exercise, please do the following to make sure all the .dll files in your OS are in the correct place.

    Backup/archive/copy

To be on the safe side I strongly recommend that before doing anything at all you check that your back up/archive/copy of all your important data, drivers, files, settings, work, etc is 100% up to date accurate and reproducible, (even if your back up is even only a day or so out of date, it's worth updating it now.)
Also don't forget to check that you have all your application Installation CD's to hand together with the product keys (including those for Windows itself)

Windows Protected System File Checker SFC

    Go to Start >Run
type: sfc /scannow (note the space between c /) >okay
Have your Win XP installation disc handy as if damaged files are found they will need to be copied across from your disc, if SFC can't find correct copies elsewhere.

Windows XP Installation disc not available or wrong Service Pack - SP1 when SP2 is needed

There are work- arounds to this problem but the easiest, by far is to borrow one and use that. It is perfectly OK to do this, for the purposes of running SFC, and if you ask around all your friends, you are likely to find someone who will be able to help you out.

SFC no disc, no friends able to help.
Well you will need to do it the harder way and as a registry edit will be required it is essential that you back up your registry before you do anything else. Then in the event of trouble it will be easier to repair your registry. Download ERUNT from here: ERUNT download and review - registry backup tool from SnapFiles and take a moment to familiarise yourself with the programme and how to repair your registry with it if it should become necessary. At the same time it would be wise to create a System Restore point, post back here if you need instructions on how to do this.

For the alterations needed to run SFC If you go here scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article! you will find detailed instructions on the copying of files and the system changes you need to make. When you have followed all the instructions, reboot you machine and try to run SFC again, and please let us know how you go.

Please post back with more questions if need be and how you get on with this test.

    kind regards,

Just want to add maybe another thing to check out, I see that you have a new machine and all, but notice that you still have SP2, which means the pc may be a little out of daate with microsoft windows update. With that in mind, maybe do a little research and see if you have the newest version of JHavascript. Am not 100% sure about the online games, but if i remember correctly, the pogo site runs off java scripts. Maybe another quick thing to check into.

    Hi,

Very good post and suggestion for janinky JMS. The latest Java is 6_update 7

Another suggestion is to download JavaRa.exe which will keep your system up to date with Java Runtime environment.

I hope this post is of assistance to you.

    kind regards,

Still in the dark. i'm a bit afraid of doing the registry edit (no helpers close by. I live far out in the country) because I don't have backup hardware/software? other than just "restore". I'm not computer-wise like the rest of you. I've had computers for 7 years and know the basics but I might be in the catergory of "a little knowledge is dangerous".
Saying "afraid" means that whenever I try to do something elaborate as suggested, I usually do something that kinks up the whole system.
At the moment, my computer is fairly still as programmed by the manufacturer because I did a system restore just a few days ago. (sorry I did that because I lost a lot of important outlook express messages).
I will venture into the registry edit suggestion but I need to build up the courage.
I tried to download Windows Service Pack 3, but after an hour of waiting for the download to end, I got an error message saying that it could not download because my system might not be configured correctly for it and that I might need a "patch". It took me an hour to find the download at Microsoft because the main listed download was for Office (25 hour download) and it was a bit tricky to find the one for home use.
I downloaded Direct X anyway but that was of no help.
I'm going to call the manufacturer today and tell them this computer is not worth what I'm paying for. (simple emails).

    More frustrations!
I tried downloading Java 7 and after about 10 minutes of the download, I got an error message:
Error 1335: The cabinet file M5196.tmp required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error or error reading from the CD ROM or a problem with this package.
I then clicked on IGNORE and got an error message, Internal Error 2350.
    and Installation Failed.
I DID have a firewall turned on. Was this the problem? I'm so sick of this.

    Hi Janinky

Did you run SFC Scannow that I suggested in a previous post? that does not include registry changes when just running the scan.

My final advise to you would be exercise your warranty immediately with Dell as this is not fare on you to be stressed so with a four months old computer.... refer them to this thread if they want to know how hard you have tried to correct your system problems.

Regarding your SP3 installation, here is a link that you could plough through to see if any of the posts may help.

    Good luck,

    kind regards,
