First the Blue Screen of Death...and now just a black screen.

    Hello everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satelite Pro, Windows XP.

Today when I turned on my computer and started to use the internet, a blue screen flashed and then my computer turned off. I kept trying to turn on my computer...and it kept happening.

Finally, it let me get back to my desktop. I immediately got a notification that my computer had recovered from several serious errors. It then opened up an internet page to explain the errors to me. One of them was a blue screen error (or I think that's what it was called), and the other one was a REALLY bad error (it said that the error data got corrupted, and for that to happen was really rare, so something was really wrong my computer.)

So, I tried to run a virus scan...but for some reason it didn't work. I tried to see what else I could do. I realized that there were updates that had to be installed...Service Pack #3. I started installing it. I walked away from my computer to brush my teeth, so I have no clue as to whether or not it finished installing. When I came back, the screen was completely black even though the "Power" light was still on. I turned the computer off. I turned it back on. There was just a black screen. Nothing was loading. I've tried to let the computer sit for a while off, but it just stays black.

I am a student. I have summer assignments to do. School starts in three days. I'm in big trouble if I can't figure this out.

I really appreciate any help that you can give me. I tried calling Toshiba Help Service but it was a $35 fee to receive help. Thank you for your assistance!

when you turn on, do you get anything on the screen, either post info (white writing on a black screen) or an OEM logo (Toshiba logo or something) or is the screen totally off?

Well for a while I was just getting a black screen. Then, I randomly tried again a few hours later and I got a Toshiba logo. I was actually on the phone with my dad, who was talking to me about my problem, and he quickly told me to press F5. I did, and the safe mode page came up with a bunch of options. I selected "Safe Mode". The loading bar thingy at the bottom of the page loaded all of the way, but the screen never changed out of the black and white. It was it like froze or something.

ok, the first thing i'd reccommend creating a BartPE disc. You boot from this, and recover your files, which guess you'll need to do as you have work on it you need??
Once you have your files you can then go about possibly repairing the OS.
Go to here: Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD and it will tell you how to make a bartpe disc..
