I have had the AVG Free 8.0 edition on my computer for a couple of months but suddenly I am getting the message "a.bin file missing". I am not very technically mnded, please advise if this is an urgent problem or/and how to I remedy it?

Hi egdirdruc18 and welcome to D-A-L.

You are not alone with your problem - see here. This seems to be a problem that many are having that started yesterday. It appears AVG is still protecting your system - but it is just using yesterday's definition/signature files.

According to that site, the problem has been corrected and you should be able to manually run updates now and clear the problem.

Alternatively, you two options:

1. Wait until your AVG runs its own update - this should occur automatically within the next 24 hours.
   
   or
   
   
2. Follow these steps:
   1. Create a temporary AVG folder on your Desktop
   2. Go to AVG Updates
   3. Download AVI: 270.6.4 and save it to your temp AVG folder
   4. Download IAVI: / 1616 and save it to your temp AVG folder
   5. Start AVG
   6. Select tools > Update from directory...
   7. Select your temp AVG folder and follow prompts to complete update.

Note - I just checked the wife's PC (she runs AVG 8) and it too had the same a.bin error. I told AVG to check for updates, which it found, installed, then promptly cleared the a.bin error.

So, it appears AVG has corrected the problem on their end and I recommend doing a manual update to correct your side - after which, all should be fine.
