ok managed to sort it out by upgrading to sp3 first.

iv also got sound etc working (p.s the acer website is actualy really usefull)

the only problem i have now is 2 things....

    1) whenever i try to update windows, i just get errors? using either IE or just using automatic updates it still just fails ? (and yes iv restarted )

and the only problem is that my hot kes dont work anymore, i used to press FN (the function button) and the cursor up to increase volume and cursur down to decrease volume but now it doesnt work?

    any ideas?

i managed to sort out the windows update doing the below :

    1. Stop the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:
    a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    net stop wuauserv

    2. Register the Wups2.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
    a. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

    3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
    net start wuauserv

    (found on the windows website)

and i have partly managed to get the hotkeys to work.

pressing FN and the cursor up increases the volume but i dont get the volume coming on the screen like it used to?

In order to show the volume meter in your HP lappy follow these steps:
    - you need winrar programe, google for it

-Extract the two files, ehres.dll and ehtray to

    C:\WINDOWS\ehome
    Dont close winrar yet
C:\ is where my OS is installed, change that in your lappy if windows is installed in D, E
    .. etc

-extract ehtray file to this directory too
    C:\Documents and Settings\ Your User Name \Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Restart your lappy and wait till all start up programs load then try to increase, decrease volume , and you should see it on the screen
