userinit.exe - Application error
Hey there.
I've recently discovered some kind of virus that won't let me use my computer at all! During startup, as the OS loads up my desktop, i get this
"userinit.exe - Application error"
And all that loads is my desktop background with no icons or start menu.
Problem is, i don't have my OS install disk, and trying to access task manager brings up:
"Task manager disabled by administrator"
Ive tried so many google solutions to no avail. And Last Known Good did not work. I can however get into task manager through safe mode using the admin account. and ive tried disabling all startup programs via msconfig but then i still got the "userinit" issue.
Any help would definatly be appreciated.
Thanks.

Try Safe Mode with Networking and then this:
Go to Kelly's and run the registry fix Restore Winlogon\Userinit and see if it will solve the problem.
Restore Winlogon\Userinit

Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP
Or else try Safe Mode / System restore to a point prior to the problem.
Why do you not have the XP CD? Is this a manufactured computer or what was the original source of XP?

Im currently tried using Kellys method. However, I wasn't able to run REGEDIT.
computer was booted up using safe mode with networking,
The only way i know to run regedit at the moment was through New Task in task manager.
However, the file "regedit" or "regedit.exe" was not found. and I couldnt find it in the windows folder.
Is there a file used to access the registry key?
Ive tried restoring the system to a prior date. but that didnt work either.
If only i had that disk. Problem is, I put this computer together at my uncles house a couple years ago, and appearantly left the OS cd there when i was done. Now its lost in the unlimited abyss of his stuff.
Lesson well learned on my part. . .

These are all symptoms a bad virus.
It turns off all your admin privileges.
Anyway is this Home or Pro?
Are you familiar with HijackThis and if so can you run it?

okay, So i didnt have HJT on the computer. So i copied the install file into a flash drive,(from a working computer) but when i went to transfer, the computer wouldnt even read the flash drive! O_O i think it's also screwed with my USB drivers or something. (that would explain why my wireless keyboard & mouse are disabled)
So i burnt the file to a cd and ran HJT. Now i have a HJT log on notepad, but no way to post it since i cant use USB. (i can only navigate via keyboard btw) I have another cd i could use to put the notepad file on, but i dont know how id go about burning it via task manager.

I was thinking you could use it via Safe Mode with Networking.
Anyway the point is getting the log text. There is nothing else to do at this point.
Please post the log text here and allow at least 24 hours for a reply:
