Either quick time pro or iLead will convert to the ipod format however you have to buy both. I don't know if there is anything that'll do it for free. Quicktime only works for quick time movies files I think. iLead will convert a dvd to ipod format although it will take quite sometime (its only a little faster than real time); I've only used dvd's on that so I don't know if it will work with avi files. avi isn't really a format. Many formats can be saved as an avi file. Try installing the DivX codec to help with the conversion. I've never tried to burn a dvd so that I can play it on a tv so I can't help you there.
