On my laptop, in my Network Connections folder, it shows that my Local Area Connection has a Network Cable Unplugged, Firewalled. This is also shown in the system tray. I'm still unable to share files either way (between laptop and desktop, which are the only computers in the network).

I never use ethernet cable to connect to my desktop, it has always been via my wireless router, which I have reset a couple of times, hoping that would solve the problem. I've even disabled the router and tried using ethernet cable, but I still get the same problem.

I'm really stuck now. I don't know what to do next... Your help is golden!

PS: The remote folders appear in the network node on my laptop, but I get an error sound when I try to connect to the docs on my desktop. Vice versa for desktop to laptop.

Let me know if I need to clarify. I copied most of the text above from another PC-help website since I'm disabled. Typing for me is painful at times...

Did you run the Network Wizard on both computers?

I'll throw out an idea. When we first hooked up our Linskys wireless router I couldn't get connected because out of the box it was set up yo be secure so I tried what you have hookoed up and got the same message. So on a hunch I turned off Threatfire and Spybot and tried to configure the connection again. I don't remember the exact steps when I activated connection wizard but I do remember having to make a floppy disk and insert in the desktop 1st Because it said to put it in the host computer 1st and after the Window that opens showing files being transfered and it completed it told me to insert the floppy in the laptop and same window opened showing files being transfered and when it completed a window opened up and gave me the connect prompt and I clicked on it and it connected. Now my situation is different than yours in that my Desktop is wire connected to router instead of wireless like yours. I think I would check your router 1st to see if a firewall has been enabled for whatever reason. then any firewalls ,or Virus,Spyware I would disable till I got connection. I aint real hip when it comes to windows as I basically run linux but I did this on the wifes computer cuz she runs Vista and Xp. Some of the other members are really more knowledgeable about what you are dealing with than I but like I said, Thats I got wireless to work with her stuff till I finally figured out why we couldn.t hook up to the router wirelessly and it took Linsky support over the phone with me to straighten that out.

Setup was run on both laptop and desktop. The connection worked fine for several months, then all of a sudden my desktop doesn't want to allow me to view files on my laptop. It's like it happened out of the blue. No new installations or new configurations.

With both computers running:

Go to: start > My Network Places

Choose from the upper menu: View: List

What is listed?


Also try each computer in order to see what they say about the other.

Okay, on my LAPTOP it shows links to folders on my DESKTOP, plus a couple of recursive links to places on my laptop (?).

On my DESKTOP there is NOTHING listed on my network places.

Yep. Still can't connect. It shows my laptop's shared folders, but when I click on them it just shows a "busy" cursor, then beeps to indicate that nothing happened.
