Unhappy Turn off to install important updates.

I'm looking for some help on this one.

I just installed XP SP3 on my HP and everything appeared to go well. Then as directed I installed the additional security updates. However, everytime I click the "Turn Off Computer" button it will display the message to Click turn off to install important updates...... I have done this several times & the message keeps appearing.

I've restored to the point following the SP3 install, no luck.
I have also removed an SQL update (KB948109) which I thought may be the problem, still no luck.

I've learned that turning off auto updates works temporarily but, I am looking for a permanent solution.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check your Task Manager for this running:

    wuaudt.exe

    Is it?

Also go to start > All Programs > Windows Update

On the left menu choose: Review your update history

    Anything strange here?

Have you tried to delete the contents of the Software Distribution folder?

Disable the Automatic Updates service in services.msc. Then delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

Turn Automatic Updates service back on and then restart your PC and head to Windows Update to install the updates that need installing again.

This process has got rid of any hotfixes that are awaiting installation and allows you to start afresh.

No problem. Your ideas are probably better. At least more ideas!

Thank you all for the response.....

No offense to jephree but, I went with OWENs response & everything appears to be working fine with one exception.

After restarting & installing the updates I noted that update KB928366 (.net Framwork Ver1.1 sp1) did not install and was flagged as FAILED, this reproduced the problem. I just repeated the suggestion made by OWEN, this time doing a custom install without KB928366. ALL APPEARS TO BE OKAY.

    Thanks to jephree & owen

As for the failed install.... that another problem which I will attempt to solve later.

Glad that has removed the irritating problem

You could try a manual install of KB928366.
