Try reinstalling your burning software if you have any or download a trial of another software brand to test . If you don't have any burning software you might think about getting some. I don't like to use windows to burn files. I recommend Nero.

No. Thats really the only one that I use. Sorry but if that isn't it & you have the same result with other burners & cd-r works fine then it might be something wrong with your installation of windows. I don't know why it would work with cd but not dvd. Installing Sp 3 might fix your problem but I can't guarantee it. It fixed one of mine w/out me having to reinstall windows. If you don't have Sp 2 installed then you definitely need to install that. Sorry if this doesn't help.

In a combo drive the CD and DVD laser functions are distinct so it is not unusual that one can fail and not the other.

If you are saying the exact same thing happens on two or more drives then this is more strange.

You might try Uninstalling the drive via the Device Manager then reboot. This will force XP to reload its drivers.

    Also the following might help:

    CD drive filters etc.
    --------------------------------------------------
If you feel comfortable editing the registry, here are some steps:

Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
    Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.

Once here click File in the upper left corner and choose: Export (this key)
Export to your Documents as a backup. If needed you can go back to this file and Import it back.

    Then:

On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally

Also check UDMA/PIO settings under your IDE channel in the Device Manager.

If set to DMA try changing to PIO.

If the problem persists view your Event Viewer:

    Event Viewer
    --------------------------------------------------
Check your Event Viewer via Administrative Tools.

Open the System as well as Application tabs and look for red X errors that coincide with your problem. Details here:

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

Basic information on Event Viewer errors can be found here: EventID.Net
