It used to work great. I had it set to go into hibernation after 1 hour idle time. I haven't changed that. I can still put the machine into hibernation manually, but it won't do it automatically. The only recent configuration changes that immediately come to mind is the addition of Verizon DSL. But my router isn't actually seen as a device, right? The ethernet adapter has always been there, but previously not used. I've attached my hardware scan results.
Way back when I had a PC running Millenium, there would always be created a .txt file in the Windows or System directory, named I think "hiber.txt" or something similar, that would log and/or identify reason(s) why hibernation did not occur. Does anyone here remember that? Well, there is no such file found under WXP, or else I just don't know how to locate it.
Of course, my other Power Options execute as desired, like turning the monitor off after 5 minutes, but it will no longer automatically hibernate. Any suggestions?
So you are saying that after 1 hour of idle time, it doesn't do anything? Check your settings again to make sure that it is set correctly. Also, what are all of the other settings that are set to happen (Standby, etc.). Also, check your Power Scheme. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but with these kind of problems, I am better at fixing if I get a crack at it in person.
When the hour is up, the monitor is off of course, and when I revive it there is nothing evident.
I've got it set to turn off hard drive after 45 minutes, and Standby=never. I've tried everything I can think of: modifying the settings, rebootings; but to no avail.
The monitor will automatically turn off when the signal drops out, so the setting is not necessary. Turn off all the other settings and set the hibernate to the quickest setting, like say 5 minutes. If it works, then it may be a different setting preventing hibernation.
Well thanks! I think it's going to work again now. What you suggested must have jarred it back to sanity or something. It succeeded to hibernate when I set it as you suggested. Then I put back the monitor turn-off after 3 minutes, and hibernate after 10; and that also succeeded! Eventually I may be able to return it to its former precise settings. 'Not sure what had gone awry. I like the quick monitor turn-off because it glows otherwise in a room whose windows face the nearby street and I don't want it attracting undue attention. I've been known to use the machine at all hours.
