I am not sure which forum to place this in, so I'm starting here. Please direct me elsewhere if necessary. I'm running XP, SP3.
Recently I had all kinds of issues with my machine, and had to install all kinds of stuff for diagnostics without really understanding what each one did. (I used a different site for help - it didn't solve my main issue, though it did clear out the malware.)
I leave my machine on most of the time because I'm doing research or in the middle of a project. But ever since those problems a couple of months ago (and I can't recall what all was installed or changed), my first appearance at my computer in the morning now finds the thing either turned completely off, or restarted and waiting for me to tell it to restart yet again for changes to take effect.
I did end up uninstalling AVG (every time I installed the new 8.0 version it screwed up my machine!) and now have Avast. But I find nowhere within Avast's interface that allows me to choose whether to automatically restart or wait for consent. My thought is that Avast is creating the restart, but I don't know that for a fact.
How can I tell what is causing this, and then set preferences so it won't automatically restart or shut down?
Did you check computer temperatures?
Have you checked your POWER OPTIONS settings ?
Laptop or desktop?
Pre or post SP3?Recently I had all kinds of issues with my machine
As broni asked, can you check your machine temps, and is there any dust buildup around any enclosure vent openings? (Laptop or desktop.)
This indicates an incomplete program (or possibly hardware) install.now finds the thing either turned completely off, or restarted and waiting for me to tell it to restart yet again for changes to take effect.
Can you either list what you installed, or if you're sure you're malware etc free, uninstall some or all of these programs?... had to install all kinds of stuff for diagnostics without really understanding what each one did. (I used a different site for help - it didn't solve my main issue, though it did clear out the malware.)
