Hi, I am new to the forums because of an issue I am having with my HP L2000 laptop with Windows XP SP2 installed.

Last week my computer first showed the signs of skipping when I was listening to music through windows media player. It sounded like a cd that a cat thoroughly scratched up. When I tried to exit out of WMP, I noticed the mouse skipped at the same time as the music. The little light on the front of the computer with the 3 discs on top of each other is solid orange when the skipping occurs and the fan for the CPU is going at max speed. I ran pretty much every program trying to find a virus or anything that could be causing it. CWShredder, HJT, Spybot S&D, and AdAware. Then I tried Registy Medic. It found 620+ files that were messed up but since I had the free version, it will only fix 5 at a time and you have to rescan after every time. So on Friday when my mom gets her paycheck I will be spending the 30 bucks to get that but since that scan and a failed system restore, no internet connectivity.

I even tried going straight through the router and it just stops at "Acquiring Network Address". Also, I forgot to mention in my first section that Internet explorer has been eating a lot of memory, I checked the task managers once and it was over 250,000 k but the CPU usage stays under 30 most of the time. So if you guys have any clue as to what the problem could be, hard drive, memory, malware, virus, whatever, leave a suggestion. It would be GREATLY appreciated!

First off I would not spend any money on software.

My first suggestion is to let our Pros look at your HijackThis log:

I can't get my HiJackThis log on here because the computer with the problem will not connect to the internet so I am using my Playstation 3's internet browser to post on here.

Put HijackThis on a floppy or some other USB drive.

Import it into the machine and export the log.
