computer freezing problem
hello!
my computer freezes quite often. sometimes it doesnt and most times it does. its like it works for one minute and then another the screen just freezes. nothing is responding. and then a few second like 10 seconds later it works back. it happends every minute sometimes twice in 1 minute. i would re-start and sometimes it will work fine but sometimes it just keeps freezing.
another thing is that when booting it sometimes freezes as well. so i would hold the power button down and re-start. is that bad? is that the same as cutting the power off?
it used to happend when i download/upgrade some programs like yahoo messenger or my anti virus.
but now it seems to happen more often.
i have zone alarm anti-virus with firewall. i've tried ccleaner and hijack this to clean up my system but it still freezes.
what can i do to solve these problems? help!!!
my system specs:
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ (2.20GHz)
960MB of RAM
160 GB HDD
another thing i should mention is that i have i think u call it dual bootihng? i have windows XP in two languages. the hard drive has 4 partitons.
1 fat32 - win XP -
1 ntfs - win xp - english
1 ntfs - store files
1 ntfs - empty

MemTest
--------------------------------------------------
Try running MemTest.
-
which Memtest86+ should i download? the source codes as well?
and i don't understand how to open it?
-
Preferably the floppy if you have a floppy drive.
Or USB for a flash drive.
Or ISO for a CD.

okay i downloaded the flash one. should i put it in my flash and the run it?
-
i'm sorry. i'm not familar on how to use this progam.
-
The flash is the one I've never used.
Anyway you unzip it and put it on the drive then boot the drive.
This is a bootable program that will run itself off the boot.
On a flash drive you need to have a system that will boot the USB.
You need to verify in your BIOS Boot Menu the Boot order of your drives.
A floppy would be the easiest if you have a floppy drive.
-
ok. i understand. but what do i do after it boots?
-
Just let it run.
If your RAM is "very bad" it will immediately throw errors on a RED screen.
Otherwise it will just run until you power off the computer.
If it runs for an hour with no errors your RAM is probably OK.
The next suspect would be heat.
-
if it runs red what happends?
does it shut down?
its a test and doesnt modified any files right?
can u answer the question abt the power button?
