Question Freezing while copying files for XP install

Sorry if this may be a repeat problem. I searched the forums but came up empty.

I wish to re-install windowsXP. It's been a long time coming. I ran a defrag and a few days later starting having profile issue.

I went through repair console and deleted the old files on the partition. Then I restarted and began a new windows install on the same partition. Of course the old directory is gone so I first had to put in the win 98 CD. That went great and after using the SP1 CD the install got to where I am having problems. That would be copying the files for the installation. It just freezes during the copying process. So far on my many attempts I have nade it as far as 12%, 25%, and then 70% after cleaning the install CD. Even though the CD looks spotless I never seem to get through the file copy process.

Is there a way I can copy the I386 folder from the install CD to the hard drive and then use that directory for the install? I would presume this would be done from the repair console as well right? If this can be done what would be the proper commands to pull off the copying to the hard drive.

    Any help would be appreciated.

In general any installation errors are hardware related.

That being said I do not follow exactly what you are doing.

First off you do not want the Recovery Console. You want a Repair Install.

Also are you referring to an Upgrade CD that requires proof of a previous Windows (98)?

That would be the only function there.

went through repair console and deleted the old files on the partition.
Why? Depending on what you removed your only option might be a Clean Install (full format).

    Basically these are the steps:

    Repair Install XP
    --------------------------------------------------
    1) Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press the Enter key

    2) You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed

    3) The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to "Repair the selected Windows XP installation." Press "R".

    4) Windows XP will copy the necessary files to your Hard Drive to begin the installation and will then reboot. You will see the message that informs you to "Press any key to boot the CD". Do Not press any keys this time just wait a few seconds and the Windows Startup Screen will be displayed. Following this you will be greeted by the Windows XP Setup Screens.

    5) When Setup has completed you should find all of your previously installed applications and settings are intact.

    --------------

If problems persist I'd suggest a Clean Install (full format).

Again most such errors are hardware related.

Perhaps run the manufacturers diagnostic on your hard drive.

    Also:

    MemTest
    --------------------------------------------------
    Try running MemTest.

The reason I'm trying to get around formatting and starting completely over is because I did something really stupid. That being I created a hard drice subdirectory called backup. Where I placed all the goods I wanted to backup. The stupid part was not burning them to a DVD before all this mess caught up with me. So I'm trying to get windows running without formatting the drive.

I did run Microsoft's memory test program. I came up clean on that. Other than that I don't really know how to determine if there is hardware issues or not. I could always try and swap the Sony DVD drive as my main drive with an old CD-rom drive I have.

    Anyway any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

The Clean Install will only format the system partition: C:

If you put the backup on C: then yes this would be an issue.

If C: is not clear then this might be the whole issue.

You should be able to Boot a Live CD like UBUNTU to try and get your backup first.

If you were having previous problems as well I'd still suggest running your hard drive diagnostic.

Okay Jephree. I think my problem goes deeper than what was on the surface. I used an older CD drive and was able to move through most of the windows setup. Then while registering the files I get a error that I suspect may be hardware related.

I have removed all hardware but the cd rom drive and my radeon 7500 video card.

    The error I see is:
windows subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x0000005 (0x004fe077 0x004fdd08)

Could this just be the end of the motherboard or processor?

    Let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

It is most likely a hardware error.

As mentioned above I would first run the manufacturers diagnostic on your hard drive.

Also if you are not running a Clean Install (Full Format C: ) then you may also have errors until you do so.

If you have data on C: you need to save then extract the drive and data first.

I would then wipe the C: partition and run a Clean Install with a Full Format on C:

Again I would test the hard drive first. You may need a new one. There is no reason to suspect the motherboard nor processor at this point.

I was just wondering if this issue has been resolved because I am facing almost the same problem. I had to reformat my computer once because of a virus and now I'm trying to reformat it again because I somehow managed to get another virus. The problem is that it keeps getting stuck at copying files. I have tried deleting and creating new partitions and have also tried using smartdrv which apperantly makes it go faster, but with no luck. If anyone knows how to fix it please let me know.

    Thanks
