If anyone could please help, it would be most appreciated (I can't even tell you how much!)

I have a Dell Latitude D600 running XP Professional (I've only had it about a month). XP was pre-installed when I bought the computer but I do have the restore disks.

Just went to start it up and received the following error:

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry Cannot Load The Hive (File): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software


First of all, I need to know how to save my files so I don't lose any data. This is beyond important.

Next, if anyone has a step-by-step way of correcting the error, I'd be most grateful.
