Still nothing, but if it helps i have one i think 80 ribbon IDE and one 40 ribbon one

i think thats the right ones. and one has a blue end and one has a black end. Should i just change them out completely

As in unhooking one from the cd or optical drive and putting that one in the HD?

The IDE data cables are 80 conductor/40 pin ribbon and/or 40 conductor/40 pin ribbon.

I meant on the motherboard ends, not the drive ends/middle.

If you never disconnected any data cables, leave them where they are for now.

Just to add:

IDE (ribbon) cables have colored coded "ports".

Blue goes to the motherboard.

Grey is slave.

Black is Master.

To illustrate;

The PRIMARY IDE is L.
The SECONDARY IDE is K.
