    formatting problem

    hello everybody,

I was underway to format my harddrive and re-install XP as i have already done before.
My normal procedure, is to reboot with windows CD, choose recovery console,
format C: /fs:ntfs . Now unless my memorey is rusty, that's how i've done it.
What is happening now is that after i type the format command line, it asks whether i really want to continue, i type Y and it starts then 5 seconds after it's back to the c promt. In other words nothing happens! and the disc is untouched.

Am i missing something terribly obvious?

    thanks for advice

Is C the entire drive, or is it partitioned?

Is boot block protection or machine level anti-virus enabled in the machines bios?

I did manage to accomplish the reformat and subsequent install.

Well, what happened you might ask. I think i'm too ashamed to mention it, but i will anyway, since i''ve always gotten help from this forum.

I had the wrong cd in the player, ok all the fuss getting everything right and i forget to put in the correct cd.....sorry, i deserve to be labeled n00b

    sorry for wasting your time

It is not a waste of time if something is learned. And we learned that you are a n0... err, I mean that we all must be careful we have the correct disks on hand before we start!

    Thanks for the follow up.

I've been at this for decades - and the more I learn, the more I realize there is still to learn, with new stuff to learn coming on line every day.
