windows error when booting
i dont know if anyone can help or not but a friend of mine has just started recieving a message when booting up saying
c:\windows\system 32\regsvr.exe
ntvdm cpu has encountered an illegal instruction and needs to close
with the code cs:06bb ip:0111 op:63 65 42 65 67
she is using windows xp home edition sp2
worst case scenario i could re-install windows for her but if it is possible to correct the problem i would rather do that. i would be grateful for any help thanks

That error indicates that some software is trying to run in 16bit DOS.
It is pointing to regsvr.exe but that covers so much that I'd suspect the software is try to run regsvr which is the registration service.
If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:
System Restore

You might try a System Restore to a point prior to your problem:
start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

a system restore did not work however i dont know how long she has had the problem

1) Can the error window be closed or ignored?
2) Are you familiar with msconfig?
2a) If so go to startup and "de-select" everything and reboot.
2b) If the error ceases go back to startup and start turning things back on.
Via this trial and error you should find the program that is causing this.
3) You could also run a HijackThis log by our professionals over in our HijackThis section:
HijackThis
--------------------------------------------------
Please read THIS and after completing the steps outlined post a HijackThis log over in that section along with a brief description of your problem.
Do not post HijackThis logs in this section please.
