    New desktop icons not sticking!

    As part of my grand computer project I'm changing as many of the regular - that is to say dreary - XP icons. Those yellow folders really get on my wick!
    I'm using a mix of icons from these two collections here:
    http://www.tucows.com/preview/194339
    http://iconfactory.com/freeware/preview/ec85

    Changing the icons is easy enough, but this morning I added new icons for Thunderbird and Firefox from other websites, and I noticed afterward that the folder icons that I'd changed had all reverted back to the XP folders.

    I've changed a few in the Programs menu as well. But these have all jumped back to the original icon too.

    Most frustrating. Has anyone got any suggestions?

    I see this post from another forum:

    You need to go to Start > Run > regedit
    and browse to the
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Clsid
    key. On the left pane you will see a CLSID folder with different
    subfolders having numbers and letters.

    OK, right click the CLSID folder, select 'permissions'
    On the top there is a list of users, including System, choose System.

    On the lower part there is a list made up of
    Administrators permissions Allow Deny
    Full control -->> x
    Read -->> x
    Special permits

    You have to check, deny read and total control permissions for System.
    so it can't change the subkeys of this item, which control the icons
    used in the desktop. Click apply and reboot.

    Your customizations should be protected from any change now.

    Backup your Registry before changing it always.

    ERUNT is good for that:
