xp won't recognize modem on sata boot

I installed a new 250 Gb sata drive as an update from my 40 gb ata. I can boot from either drive and navigated the bios setups with minimal problems but the sata copy of xp does not detect my modem, which I am using from the ata drive xp copy now. I tried removing and reinstalling the modem and that didn't help. I am on my second install of windows on the sata drive with the same problem. Ideas please?

    thanks
    Dave

Did you install the motherboard drivers on the SATA drive?

I reloaded the mobo drivers and tried removing/reinstalling the modem again, if I remember the quote gist, stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. but with electronics it sometimes works. bring on those ideas, I'm stumped...

I first wonder why you are installing the same OS on one computer. Possible hardware conflicts but this is only speculation from a great distance.

In more detail: how do you know the "modem" is the issue?

As a "modem" is not part of the computer then are we talking about you NIC or Network Adapter?

If so is this missing in your Device Manager?

    Is this an Ethernet connection?

Have you run the New Connection Wizard?

right, I am upgrading from 40 to 250 gb and will remove the 40 gb when the 250 is working right. hardware conflicts, maybe disconnect the ata drive and try...hmmm

it works with the 40 gb ata xp installation, but is not detected by the sata xp, so on the 'if it looks like , smells like etc' principle that's my starting position, but I'm sure open to suggestions otherwise

good try, the machine has an ethernet adaptor and card listed in both installs. they are disabled in the ata install - I made the sata xp install the same, rebooted and the modem is still not detected. no listing for modems in device manager in the sata xp.

If so is this missing in your Device Manager?

    no

    Is this an Ethernet connection?

    no

Have you run the New Connection Wizard?

repeatedly after each change... and rebooted too

I think I'll try another XP install, with the ata drive disconnected and see how that goes, tomorrow.

anything else anyone can think off???

What is the connection if not Ethernet?

Modems never show up in the Device Manager. Unless perhaps an old USB modem.

If USB then the drivers might be very suspect. SATA might very well handle them differently from ATA or not handle them at all most likely.

Did you install the SATA drivers at the F6 prompt of the XP install? Most 'newer' hardware (SATA) would be 'geared towards' Ethernet connectivity.

If the modem connection is USB I'd strongly suggest getting an Ethernet modem.

Otherwise leave XP on the ATA and use the SATA for storage.

Of course you are right about the ethernet modem type, expertisnotI. My modem is in a pci slot and always shows in device manager when it is detected.

good news is disconnecting the ATA drive, pulling the modem card and reloading XP on the sata drive, rebooting with the modem installed worked and I have what I was after.

thanks for the help, much appreciated

    Regards
    Dave
