CD writer not copying onto blank discs

My CD Writer is not writing onto blank discs. When I put CDs in they play normally, just can't write onto a blank. It keeps coming up with an error message saying the disc could be faulty (or something like that) but I've put in 4 blank discs, which are all new and I've used the blank discs before, and it won't copy. I've also done a test on the CD drive and it came up that it was in working order. Can anyone help me with this please.

I need a bit more information to help you diagnose the problem:

What make and model is the CD drive?
What program are you using to write the CDs?
What is the exact error message you are given?
Has your CD Writer worked previously?
Are all the CDs you are trying from the same pack? (I'm getting at the fact that it could be a bad batch of CDs).
    What test did you perform?

I hope I can answer your questions correctly and give you the information you need.

    1. HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE 8483B I assume that would be the make. If not, could you please explain where I would go to get the correct info.

    2. The programme I am using is Windows XP (hope that's what you mean).

    3. The CD writing wizard comes up, I put the blank CD in the drawer, click next, then the message says: Cannot complete the CD writing wizard. There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable.

    4. Yes the CD writer has been working fine, I copied a disc in the same way about a month ago and it worked. I have put CDs in the drive that I've previously copied and they all run and work.

    5. All the blank CDs are from the same pack which I've been using for a while, I think it was a pack of 50 and used approx 30 and up until now every one has worked.

    6. The only test I've performed is: Start: My Computer: CD Drive: Properties: Highlight the CD and click Properties:- The device is working properly.

I hope this is enough info for you, I've already checked that there is enough space on the CD so still can't work out the problem. I did delete some files a couple of weeks ago and wondered if I deleted something I shouldn't! Maybe that's the problem. Thanks again.

Are you using a program such as Nero, or other similar CD/DVD burning software is what Owen is asking in question number 2...
Without such software, you can often encounter problems in burning discs.

Sorry I knew I'd give the wrong answer somewhere!! I'm not certain what programme is burning software, could you tell me where I could look please? I know for sure it's not Nero

Burning software is the stuff which actually interacts with the CD Drive, and tells it what you want to put onto the CD/DVD.

Nero is a popular choice for people to use, but there are many different forms. Look on start, all programs, and it'll maybe show you ''My CD Writer'' or something similar?

Take a look... and report your findings

My son had installed a programme called Prism (which I didn't know about) and it had all CD stuff on there plus loads more and I've now uninstalled it. Didn't know what the programme was for and why it was there. After uninstalling that and rebooting, it still doesn't work. I've now looked in the programme menu and there is nothing there that says anything about CD. Sorry about all this!!!

I can't recall having used Prism personally, so not sure what it actually does. If it contains all CD stuff as you say, it could have been the computer's default CD burning software, in which case you would want to reinstall this.

Maybe time for someone expert to give you a hand on this one, and provide you with a fresh look on the problem.

Good luck and i hope you get it all sorted.

Thank you very much for all your help, hope I can sort it out. I don't think Prism was the default burner because I was burning CDs before that programme was installed. But once again thanks and I hope someone else can help?
