Can anybody help ?
A friend has an old computer to dispose of and he wants to wipe the hard disc securely beforegetting rid of of it . He does not want to buy any software as he will only use it only once

Can anybody recommend a free software to download to do the job

PS: I would like to start a new "Security" thread as it may be of interest to others

what's he doing withe the old machine is he dumping it, taking it to a PC recyclers or giving it to Friends?


you can get software to wipe the hard drive but one of the best ways to stop anyone getting info of the drive break it up.

My friend wants to donate the computer to a charity and would prefer not to destroy the HD .

has your friend got sensitive data on the drive?

you could try KILL DISK

do they know what Charity will be having the machine as they may want the operating system installed and if no sensitive data has been on the machine just formatting the drive and reinstalling the O/S will do
