    old programs

I upgraded from win98 to winXP, but several programs which worked on my former OS don’t perform properly.
I tried to install them using the program compability wizard but I receive an error message saying
    “please specify a valid program”.
This happens, for instance, when I try to install Office97 from the original CD.
    What can be done?
    Please advise.
    Thanks

I ain't no expert but it looks like your trying to run FAT 32 files on a NTFS File system which is what Windows XP runs on. I ain t too sure the 2 systems are compatible.

FAT32 and NTFS dont have compatibility issues, and if he upgraded from 98 then he would most likely to be still on FAT32 (If so i would recomend upgrade to NTFS but not needed to get office to install).
Office 98 should install just without the compatibility mode, i wouldnt recomend using the upgrade from 98 to XP i would fresh install to boost your preformance but thats up to you. try it without compatibility on and see if that works, if not did you have it installed before you upgraded?
    Thanks,

Actually NTFS can read FAT but not vice versa.

This has little to do with XP not running Office '97.

Here is a Google on similar issues:

Exactly so it wouldnt be a compatibility issue
    Are you running SP2?
