    No Sound after XP Install ?

    My Sony Vaio LA1 previously ran on MCE. I did a complete clean install of XP Pro but ever since have had no sound at all using WMP, Sonicstage or anything else I've tried?
    No matter what I've done including trawling the net for days on end I cannot get this problem rectified.

    Here are the Belarc scan results and I would be very grateful for any help or suggestions. I'm not a computer wiz so the simpler to understand the better for me.....

    Welcome to D-A-L.

    Firstly, you've got some Service Pack elements which have not installed correctly;

    Does your XP CD contain SP2, or do you have the seperate MS SP2 CD?
    (Latest SP2 Download - 266 MB: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en )

    If neither of the above apply, I suggest downloading and saving this file as opposed to "running" it from the MS site. This way you can run it "locally" without worrying about connection/data transfer problems, and you'll have it in case you decide to "slipstream" your own XP SP2 CD.

    I would clear these issues before attempting any further "repairs" to the machine.

    Meanwhile, I did a search on the SONY Vaio website and could find nothing that matched Vaio LA1.

    1) Can you provide the exact model number from the factory sticker/label on this machine?

    2) Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, click on the Report Wizard in the Menu Bar. Save all hardware related pages (the default) to a TEXT file in a location of your choice. (It will default the location to C:\Program Files\Lavalys\EVEREST Home Edition\Reports, unless you redirect it.)

    Compress (zip) the text file and attach that zipped text document to your next posting. (When posting, click on Advanced, and just below the posting box you'll see "Additional Options", and within that, "Attach Files". Click on "Manage Attachments" and follow the prompts. Browse to the file and choose UPLOAD.)

    Post back with your results and any further questions.

    Thank you for your time and advice which is very much appreciated.
    I have both the xp pro (oem) disc + an SP2 disc but to save searching for them downloaded the file you indicated and ran it. I don't know if anything was supposed to happen? .... it just ran for 5 mins and then clicked Finish.

    The pc is I think a UK only model? (It is the model in Everest report)
    This is the sony page - http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downl...=VGC-LA&m=2422

    I downloaded Everst & the zip is attached with report (although on running Everest said - "Your machine has Intel i945GM/PM Calistoga motherboard chipset. The current Everest version does not fully support your system")

    I hope I've done everything correctly so far!
    Thanks

    Sorry to be away so long. I've quit my job as a construction estimator and went back to construction. I'm the head carpenter/site foreman, building a large house for a client (4300+ Sq. Ft.). So, I work all day, and then work with the plans in the evening to calculate/order materials required for the next few days. If the weather is good, it's a never ending process.

    QUESTION:
    Have you installed the BETA version of XP SP3?

    If so, I would uninstall/remove it. NOTE: You may have to reinstall SP2 if you remove SP3.

    If not, and, XP SP2 is installed, all you should need to get your sound is the loading of the 1) chipset drivers and 2) sound drivers from the "Original Drivers Package" (55.71 MB) for XP from the site you provided.

    No problem with waiting, I'm just grateful for your help!

    Just to make sure I understand this correctly....

    SP3 - I had not heard of it and have not installed this intentionally but could it
    have come in updates or anything? How can I check?

    This PC (LA1) originally had XP MCE installed, then I have done a hopefully clean install of XP Pro......

    Do I need to install chipset & sound drivers from the LA1 download page which
    is MCE ? Or do I need other drivers for XP Pro - or are they all the same?

    I did think I had all these installed before...

    Thanks

    I have installed (or re-installed) the chipset and then audio from this download package - but still no sound.....

    Like WMP runs but simply no sound..... ?

    You're running SP2. The Belarc and Everest reports both reflect this. (Sorry, I forgot to refer back to those while I was typing.) It is however, curious that SP3 shows up in that listing. Hence my query.

    It was WMP 6.4, 9, & 11 which gave the Service Pack errors in your original post.

    If, when you re-ran the SP2 update, you received no errors they hopefully have been corrected.

    Those driver packages (from the site you provided in your #3 post) were generic for XP, ie; Pro, Home, MCE, etc.

    Before going further, check a few things to ensure nothing is "blocking" the sound;

    1) Check Device Manager to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks for any devices.

    2) Open your Volume Control (Start, Run, sndvol32.exe). Ensure sound levels are up and nothing is muted.

    3) Ensure any sound replication devices (speaker system, headphones, etc) are operational and correctly connected.

    4) Double-check in the machines bios to ensure your onboard sound is enabled.

    Normally it's best to use the hardware drivers from the proprietaty vendor. (SONY in this case.) However, if all the above checks out as OK, you can try the drivers direct from the hardware manufacturer;

    1) yes have 3 yellows in DM. "ethernet controller", "ehome infrared transceiver" + "unknown device" ???
    ... the LA1 does have a tv tuner & remote controller but I don't need either if
    that might be what this indicates...
    2) Volume Controls all set properly
    3) speakers are built into the LA1
    4) in BIOS - volumme sound is set to 5

    only 2 yellows now!!

    "unknown device" disappeared on reboot

    I can add that on start-up I do get the initial Windows audio sound but then nothing. Media Player appears to play music but no audio....
