If you're getting the Windows startup wav sound, this means the sound device is working, and the drivers are OK. It appears that it may/must be something to do with WMP.
Lets try to get all devices working, which will give us better odds at solving the issues. Some devices have audio elements (ie; modem, TVCapture, etc.)
ethernet controller
In Device Manager, right click on the device and Update the driver. When indicated, point to the driver location where you've saved the downloaded drivers. It will look for the .inf file which lists the driver name etc. (See picture)
Do the same for the ehome infrared transceiver
(This may be the Wireless LAN.) Try, if it's not the correct driver it will tell you that no drivers were found. Then try the next device which might apply.
SONYNC is Sony Notebook Control. If there is nothing in Device Manager for this, simply right click on the SonyNC.inf file and choose Install.

This is an old thread (February) by another poster, and I usually close these if there's no activity in the thread for over a month. This one slipped by me. Please start a new thread in the appropriate forum (XP in your case) as I am closing this thread. (Simply highlight and copy/paste your post contents from here into a new thread.)
However, I have done some research into your problem, and it appears that you have an HP-Pavilion A6045D desktop. HP Pavilion a6045d Desktop PC When I click on Driver downloads, according to the HP site, this machine came with Vista installed. Select your operating system
Did you "downgrade" the O/S to XP? If so, you may not be able to source drivers for this machine.
In your new thread, please indicate the exact make/model number of this machine (found on the manufacturers tag or Service Tag), and if it did come with Vista installed.
