    Desktop delay

    Hi,

    When the desktop appears on booting it remains icon free for about 90 seconds. After that they all appear and everything works just fine.
    The event log has the following
    Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "WndClass_CWinDrivesNotifyerHelperWindow"
    What gives? Any ideas?

    Mick

    Win XP Pro with all the updates. Firewall and virus cleaner up and running. The system has been checked and is malware and virus free. (As far as can be ascertained)

    Welcome to D-A-L.

    I've done a search of this at Microsoft and of course there is no available answers yet. Either through the MSKB or the Event analyzer.

    Most of the reference to this that I did find has to do with NERO software. There is also an instance of USB devices.

    Do you run NERO? If so, are you running the "INCD" aspect of it?

    Thanks, Yes I installed NERO 8 a couple of days ago and have had this problem ever since!! I do not have InCD.

    Any help?

    Remove NERO and restart several times.

    If the problem goes away, then I'd say the tie is with NERO.

    I've had a look at their site FAQ's, support, etc with no luck as of yet.

    (I've been using NERO 6.6.0.19 for a number of years now with absolutely no problems.)

    Perhaps an earlier NERO version might help. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen earlier software versions clear up problems.

    I've done that and the problem persists. I am loathe to use an earlier NERO as I've just spent 40 quid plus on NERO 8!!
    On startup this morning I find the event log error free yet the delay is still there.

    Puzzling or what!!

    "On startup this morning..." <- This tells me that you shut your system down overnight. Is this correct?

    "... I find the event log error free yet the delay is still there. Puzzling or what!!"

    Indeed. Especially if the log is now error free. (Is NERO still uninstalled or did you reinstall the program?)

    What do you have loading on startup? (It may also be a Service which is causing the delay.)

    Do you have Active Desktop engaged?

    If NERO is still uninstalled, and if you're willing, attempt some cleanup. If you don't already have;

    CCleaner
    =======
    Once you download and install it, open the program then click on (on the left hand side) OPTIONS, then COOKIES. Any cookies you want to save (trusted sites, places you have usernames/passwords), highlight them in the left column, then (using the directional arrows between the panes), move them to the right hand column under "Cookies to keep".

    Still under Options, click on Advanced. Remove the check mark from the box for "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"

    Then click on Cleaner (on the top left). When that window opens, click on Run Cleaner (bottom right of the window.)

    When it finishes, close CCleaner, and restart your machine.

    (Click on Download from FileHippo......, in the PayPal box)

    RegSeeker
    =========
    Download, install, and run RegSeeker. It's clean freeware. It's defaults to saving any changes made so they can be reversed if needed. (I've never seen it needed, on my machines, or others which I've worked on, for several years (4+) now.)

    When you open RegSeeker, click (on the left) "Clean the Registry". Under the new view/window, place a check mark in the box for "Invalid Services (experimental)". Then click on "OK".

    When it finishes (progress is reported at the bottom) click on "Select" (under the main "entries" window) and "Select All". Under "Action" click on "Delete selected items". You will be prompted to backup. Select YES and let it save to the default file name and location.

    Close RegSeeker, and restart your machine.

    Post back with your results and any further questions.

    Thanks for your prompt reply Dan,

    Yes, I switch the computer off each night; why would I not?

    No I have not re-installed NERO.

    I have run CCleaner(I have been using CCleaner for some months now) and Reg Seeker as instructed.

    On restarting Windows, no change. The event log still shows an error free startup and the problem persists.

    Over to you

    Sorted!! The problem was a corrupted Zone Alarm installation. As soon as I re-installed the program and ran the virus and malware checker the problem was cured.

    Thanks anyway as I have learnt a lot more about computers during the solution of the aforementioned snag.

    Glad to hear it's fixed. Hopefully this error will be more and more associated (through search engines) with something other than NERO.
