    Windows shutdown problems.

    Hi all,
This problem started a while ago after I upgraded my copy of ccleaner. After upgrading whenever I went to shut down I had a box jump up with a yellow triangle in it saying "Windows is currently in the middle of a long operation, stop the operation or wait for it to finish before shutting down" the funny thing is my system tray would lose my programs one by one as if it was shutting down but would stay on when it was empty. I googled the phrase and it came up with four results, two without a solution and two dead ends or old threads. So I removed ccleaner and all was well again, I decided to roll back to a version I knew worked and for a while it worked fine but recently it has started again. A solution is simple ditch ccleaner but I like the program, plus the fact that the internet seems not to recognise this interesting problem. Before I go any further I use AVG, Commodo Firewall, Spybot S&D and Adaware which all scan clean. So my question is does anyone else have experience with this problem? Like I said an internet search comes up with only four results! I would like to use ccleaner but I cant be completely sure its ccleaner thats causing it anymore because I rolled back to a version I know worked.
    Anyhow thanks

Right today something really weird happened when running ccleaner I got a error stating that ccleaner.exe had become corrupt and several other files on my desktop and other various places had also become corrupt and that I run chkdsk.
I did this (which took ages I might add on my 500gb drive) and now my system is fine, but I've had enough of ccleaner so went about looking into alternatives. I found a few tested and no longer have shutdown issues, its a shame I can't use ccleaner anymore because it was convenient to just right click the recycle bin and run ccleaner, but I suppose having a stable system is more important.

Anyway for those interested the alternatives to ccleaner I use are:

Disk Cleaner : very much like ccleaner without the registry cleaner and shell integration but does a great job at emptying my browser cache and cookies.
You can download Disk Cleaner from here.

For the registry cleaner (this program also does a few things that ccleaner does not but are too numerous to list here) is Baku and can be downloaded from here.

Well its still early days and I will get round to posting on the ccleaner forum to let the developers know that I've had a problem with the software and XP and will post if I get any more problems with the software I have listed above, so hope this helps, cheers

Thanks for the info and insight.

I have used CCleaner for years and always update to the latest version with never any problem.

Anyway thanks for your other ideas.

Interestingly, I too was having issues with CCleaner becoming corrupted, on an older release last year. I removed it and deleted the downloaded files and then downloaded the latest release 2.03.532 is my current version and that is running just fine.

Yeah I thought it was an XP problem and may still be, or conflicts with ccleaner and something else on my computer, when they release another update I will try it, the odd thing is that Google hasn't even really heard of this message (see here) and it was ccleaner related, if I didn't run ccleaner during a session my computer would shut down fine, doing a bit of reading has suggested it may have something to do with XP's autoplay feature ?!? Like I said though there isn't alot of info on the subject.

I'll post on the ccleaner forum, maybe try Microsoft (without holding my breath ) and do a little digging, hopefully resolving the issue (you never know stranger thing have happened)
